Fisker Ocean out-ranges Tesla Model Y by 30 miles

According to EPA reports, the longest-range version of the upcoming Fisker Ocean will travel 360 miles between charges.

That bests the Tesla

Model Y — America’s best-selling electric vehicle most months — by 30 miles.

The Ocean is a compact electric SUV designed by Henrik Fisker, an automotive designer whose credits include the original BMW Z8 and the Aston Martin DB9. This is his second attempt to launch an electric vehicle company under his own name.

His first attempt, Fisker Automotive, closed in 2014 after selling about 2,000 sporty Fisker Karma luxury cars. This second attempt, Fisker Inc.,
FSR,
+0.52%
has several products in its pipeline, including the Ocean and the Pear subcompact SUV.

The Ocean offers innovative features like an available solar roof (it doesn’t produce enough energy to recharge the battery for daily use, but Fisker says it “can produce up to 1,500 clean, emissions-free miles per year”) and a central touchscreen that rotates from portrait to landscape orientation. Prices start at $37,499.

It is built in Austria, so it will not qualify for U.S. federal EV tax credits.

The company plans to offer the Ocean in four trim levels, but the EPA certification applies to the high-end Ocean Extreme with 20-inch wheels and the larger “hyper range” battery pack.

In a press release last week, the company said it “will commence volume deliveries” of the Ocean “to U.S. customers the week of June 19.”

Delivering a vehicle to customers is a massive step for a fledgling automaker, but it does not guarantee success. This latest iteration of Fisker is one of a host of new EV startups that may topple before they reach financial stability.

The company’s stock is traded at $5.91 at press time — down from a high of $28.50 in 2021.
