Investing.com — Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid made waves at the box office on its opening weekend, hauling in $117.5 million in domestic ticket sales over the extended Memorial Day holiday.
That’s the fifth-highest showing for the holiday weekend, according to Comscore.
For Friday through Sunday, box office sales were more than $95M.
The showing could boost Walt Disney Company’s (NYSE:) efforts to revive more of its animated classics, analysts said. Shares of Disney fell 1.1%.
Mermaid was said to have a $250M production budget. Worldwide box office sales on its opening weekend reached $185.8M. The movie faces competition in the coming weeks, with Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse due to release on Friday and Paramount’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts due out June 9.
