Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan Resigns

By James Glynn

SYDNEY–Western Australia’s Labor Premier Mark McGowan has announced his resignation, saying he is exhausted and no longer wants to remain in the job.

McGowan, who was elected leader of the resource-rich state of Western Australia in March 2017, said he will depart parliament at the end of the week.

“I’m not tired of it, I’m just tired,” McGowan told reporters.

With the next state election due in just under two years, McGowan said he knew he didn’t want to lead his party through another campaign, saying the decision to depart the state’s top job had been forming for some time.

McGowan said that the experience of leading Western Australia through the Covid-19 pandemic had taken a lot out of him, and that he was confident a suitable replacement would emerge quickly.

McGowan was first elected to parliament in 1996. He led the Australian Labor Party to election wins in 2017 and 2021.
