Only a small fraction of French crypto holders have declared their coins to the state, a report claimed \u2013 with the government set to take action.<\/p>\n

Per the French IT magazine Clubic, the Ministry of Public Action and Accounts and the nation\u2019s tax bodies are preparing to act.<\/p>\n

They have been spurred into action after just 150,000 French residents \u201ccorrectly declared their cryptoassets\u201d at the end of the past financial year.<\/p>\n

French Crypto Holders \u2018Under-declare\u2019 Holdings?<\/h2>\n

According to European Central Bank (ECB) estimates, \u201csome 5 million French people hold cryptoassets including Bitcoin (BTC).\u201d<\/p>\n

Bitcoin has failed to become a global decentralised digital currency, instead falling victim to fraud and manipulation. <\/p>\n

The media outlet said tax officials \u201csuspect\u201d many taxpayers of \u201cunder-declaring their assets.\u201d<\/p>\n

And the ministry is preparing to respond by rolling out new legislation. It is working in conjunction with the nation\u2019s Economy Ministry.<\/p>\n

The new legislation will contain a \u201clarge arsenal of measures.\u201d These will \u201cforce crypto holders to toe to the government\u2019s line,\u201d ministry officials believe.<\/p>\n

The legislation will be bundled with a range of other anti-fraud rules, the ministry confirmed.<\/p>\n

And the media outlet said that these measures would come as a \u201crude awakening\u201d for French \u201ccryptocurrency enthusiasts.\u201d<\/p>\n

80% Fines Await French Crypto Holders Who Fail to Declare<\/h2>\n

Failing to declare crypto holding on tax returns is punishable by fines in France. These can rise to 40% of the coins\u2019 total worth.<\/p>\n

In the case of professional crypto traders who fail to declare coins, this amount can be doubled to a whopping 80%.<\/p>\n

The new proposals \u201ccould be discussed in the coming weeks\u201d by both lawmakers and senators.<\/p>\n

If it faces no opposition in parliament, the bill \u201ccould see the light of day\u201d before the end of fall 2024.<\/p>\n

And this means the new rules could be in place before the end of FY2024, the ministry said.<\/p>\n

New Powers on Their Way?<\/h2>\n

The Ministry of Public Accounts also wants to give the tax body new powers over citizens\u2019 overseas assets and holdings.<\/p>\n

This would help tax officials crack down on French crypto holders who attempt to hide their tokens on overseas-based wallets and crypto exchange platforms.<\/p>\n

In March, a major French media outlet reported that 15% of people aged 18-24 have bought crypto.<\/p>\n

The same outlet said that 9% of French citizens have bought crypto at some point in their lives.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
