{"id":90804,"date":"2024-05-06T00:39:39","date_gmt":"2024-05-06T04:39:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=90804"},"modified":"2024-05-06T00:39:40","modified_gmt":"2024-05-06T04:39:40","slug":"crypto-excluded-from-new-south-korean-donations-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=90804","title":{"rendered":"Crypto Excluded from New South Korean Donations Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div class=\"row mb-20\">\n<div class=\"col-12 col-lg-9 col-xl-8\">\n<div class=\"author-section\">\n<div class=\"author-info\">\n<p>\n                                                            <span>Last updated:<\/span><br \/>\n                                                        <time datetime=\"2024-05-06T03:00:27+00:00\"><br \/>\n                              May 5, 2024 23:00 EDT                            <\/time><br \/>\n                                                             <span class=\"date-v-line\">|<\/span> 2 min read                                                    <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/figcaption><p>Crypto, \u201cincluding Bitcoin,\u201d will be excluded from an amended South Korean donations law, government officials announced on May 5.<\/p>\n<p>Per Kyunghang Shinmun, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety said it wanted to \u201cexpand the scope\u201d of donations \u2013 but has decided against allowing citizens to donate crypto.<\/p>\n<h2>Donations Plans: Crypto Excluded<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"replacer\"><\/span><br \/>The ministry plans to make amendments to the Enforcement Decree of the Act on Collection and Use of Donations.<\/p>\n<p>These amendments will allow citizens to donate a slew of cash alternatives to charitable causes.<\/p>\n<p>These include loyalty points from tech giants such as Naver, as well as department store gift vouchers, securities, supermarket vouchers, and listed stocks.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry also plans to let citizens donate local government-issued, KRW-pegged stablecoins and blockchain-powered e-gift vouchers.<\/p>\n<p>The scope of donation platforms has also been broadened in the plans, with more online donation options set to be green-lighted.<\/p>\n<p>Citizens will also be able to make use of automatic response systems (ARS)-related technology when they want to give to charities.<\/p>\n<p>Ministry officials want lawmakers to approve the legal amendments in time for a July rollout.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry did not give reasons for its decision not to allow citizens to donate cryptoassets, despite the enormous popularity of BTC and other tokens in the country.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_208519\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-208519\" style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-208519\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Ministry of the Interior and Safety, South Korea. (Source: MBC News\/YouTube)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Charities to Suffer?<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"replacer\"><\/span><br \/>The news will come as a blow not only to crypto enthusiasts, but also to South Korean charities.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, charities have tried to launch crypto-powered donation drives. But they have had to contend with legal obstacles.<\/p>\n<p>South Korean law does not allow for charities to accept crypto donations. So past campaigns have relied almost entirely on the aid of domestic exchanges.<\/p>\n<p>In a January 2024 article for Bokji Times, Jang Yoon-ju, a researcher for The Beautiful Foundation \u2013 one of South Korea\u2019s biggest charities \u2013 documented the crypto-related challenges charities face in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>She claimed that potential donors had \u201cmade inquiries about cryptocurrency donations.\u201d But, Jang said, such questions were often \u201cdifficult to answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Exchanges Play Key Role<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"replacer\"><\/span><br \/>Jang noted that various attempts to launch crypto-powered donation platforms had failed in the past, with notable drives in 2014 and 2018 eventually coming to nothing.<\/p>\n<p>She added that donations made using crypto began \u201cin earnest\u201d in 2020, when four large domestic charitable organizations started encouraging the public to donate their tokens.<\/p>\n<p>But in each case, charities have had to team up with crypto exchanges that convert coins to cash, which they they pass on to the organizations.<\/p>\n<h2>Rising Popularity of Crypto Donations in South Korea?<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"replacer\"><\/span><br \/>The researcher added that crypto donations are becoming increasingly popular in South Korea, with many seeking to donate their coins to overseas charities.<\/p>\n<p>Jang explained that South Koreans had donated a total of BTC 14 to charities involved in providing aid to victims of the 2023 Turkey\u2013Syria earthquakes.<\/p>\n<p>The citizens made their donations via a platform operated by Dunamu, the creator of the South Korean market-leading Upbit exchange.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_208502\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-208502\" style=\"width: 1753px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-208502\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Trading volumes on South Korea\u2019s Upbit crypto exchange over the past 12 months.
