{"id":90195,"date":"2024-03-18T09:06:43","date_gmt":"2024-03-18T13:06:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=90195"},"modified":"2024-03-18T09:06:44","modified_gmt":"2024-03-18T13:06:44","slug":"stock-market-today-dow-ends-lower-as-nvidia-slip-dents-tech-but-walmart-shines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=90195","title":{"rendered":"Stock Market today: Dow ends lower as Nvidia slip dents tech, but Walmart shines"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div id=\"imgCarousel\" class=\"imgCarousel\">\n<p><span class=\"text\">\u00a9 Reuters <\/span><br \/>\n<i class=\"imgGrad\"><\/i>\n<\/div>\n<p>Investing.com &#8212; The Dow fell Tuesday, as investors turned cautious on Nvidia ahead of its quarterly results, and\u00a0the minutes from the Federal Reserve&#8217;s January meeting due later this week.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">By 16:00 ET (21:00 GMT), the  was down 63 points, or 0.2%, the  index fell 0.6%, lower and the  dropped 0.9%.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Nvidia slip drags on tech<\/h2>\n<p>NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:) fell more than 4% pressuring the broader tech sector lower as investors turned cautious ahead of the chipmaker&#8217;s quarterly results due Wednesday. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of Nvidia&#8217;s results, some on Wall Street are expecting the company to not only beat quarterly estimates, but also deliver better than expected guidance amid AI-led chip demand.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The only question around NVDA&#8217;s near-term performance and outlook, in our view, is to what magnitude results and guidance will exceed our (and consensus estimates),&#8221; Wedbush said in a note.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:), however, sidestepped the move lower in chip stocks to rise more than 2% after\u00a0Bloomberg reported late last week that the Biden administration is in talks to award more than $10 billion in subsidies to the semiconductor firm.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Fed minutes to guide rate-cut thinking<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Fed is set to release the  of its January meeting on Wednesday that could provide more insight into the central bank\u2019s thinking, with markets currently pricing in four quarter point rate cuts this year, starting in June.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;For now, market pricing is consistent with our call for 100bps of cuts, starting in June,&#8221; Morgan Stanley said in a note.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Following  and  prices last week prompted concerns that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates at more than two-decade highs for longer than had been expected at the start of the year.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A slew of Fed speakers this week, including Atlanta Fed President , governors  and , along with Vice Chair  could also provide further\u00a0potential clues on monetary policy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Walmart shines after Q4 beat, annual dividend hike; <span itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/Corporation\"><span itemprop=\"name\"> Home Depot <\/span><\/span> stumbles<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Supermarket giant Walmart (NYSE:), a major Dow component, rose more than 3%, after the\u00a0low-cost retailer&#8217;s fourth-quarter U.S. sales and earnings beat estimates, prompting the retail behemoth to raise its annual dividend by 9%.
