The S&amp;P 500\u2019s decline was cushioned by megacap tech-related stocks, which also helped lift the Nasdaq Composite out of a bear market. The Nasdaq gained 0.4% last week.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p><strong>In One Chart:<\/strong>\u00a0The S&amp;P 500 is top-heavy with tech. Here\u2019s what that says about future stock-market returns.<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s driving markets<\/h2>\n<p>Despite a generally well-received earnings season and signs that easing inflation may allow the Federal Reserve to halt its monetary-tightening cycle, stocks have been unable to break out of their recent range, as worries about a technical government-debt default and recent banking-sector anxiety restrains bulls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, markets are firmly in wait-and-see mode,\u201d Edward Moya, a senior market analyst for the Americas at OANDA, said via phone. \u201cEveryone knows the debt-ceiling debate will go down to the wire,\u00a0and we\u2019re going to see regional banks remain a focal point for the next several quarters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,\u00a0\u201cwhat is interesting to see is that we are still getting hawkish pushback from the Fed on the market\u2019s view that policy makers are done with tightening,\u201d Moya said. With stagflation risks still on the table, any incoming inflation data which shows pricing pressures remaining sticky will make \u201cmarkets grow nervous that the Fed will keep rates higher for longer,\u201d and cause traders to bring down rate-cut bets for later this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See: <\/strong>The stock market will struggle to rally until these 2 big fears are put to rest<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, investors and traders weighed competing assessments of the debt-ceiling negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden said a second round of talks between the White House and congressional leaders appeared set for Tuesday. Biden told reporters in Rehoboth Beach, Del., on Sunday that he remains \u201coptimistic\u201d and \u201cthere\u2019s a desire on their part as well as ours to reach an agreement \u2014 I think we\u2019ll be able to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, though, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said the White House and congressional Republicans remained \u201cfar apart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> Here\u2019s where investors may turn to \u2018hide\u2019 as U.S. debt-ceiling deadline looms based on 2011 market reaction<\/p>\n<p>Describing the remarks by Biden and McCarthy as \u201ccompeting cross currents,\u201d Jay Hatfield, chief executive of Infrastructure Capital Advisors in New York, said the debt-ceiling debate is \u201cclearly an overhang on the market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, Hatfield said via phone, \u201cwe remain bullish on the market\u201d on the view that \u201conce we get through June and into July, we will have a debt-ceiling resolution one way or another and the data will be obvious\u00a0for the Fed that CPI [consumer-price index] and PPI [producer-price index] inflation are coming down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Infrastructure Capital Advisors currently expects June\u2019s data to show annual headline rates of 3.5% for the CPI and 0.9% for the PPI \u2014 down from 4.9% and 2.3%, respectively, in April. In addition, \u201cwe believe the fundamentally flawed Fed is going to figure\u00a0out inflation has peaked and will tone down its hawkish rhetoric,\u201d Hatfield said. <\/p>\n<p>Monday\u2019s data releases showed the New York Fed\u2019s Empire State business-conditions index, a gauge of manufacturing activity in the state, plunged 42.6 points in May to negative 31.8.\u00a0Economists had expected a reading of negative 5, according to a survey by The Wall Street Journal. Any reading below zero indicates deteriorating conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank President Raphael Bostic said on Monday that he would like to see the central bank pause its cycle of rate hikes to gauge the health of the economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the appropriate policy is really to just wait and see how much the economy slows from the policy actions that we\u2019ve done,\u201d Bostic said\u00a0in an interview on CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. stocks rank as the third best-performing asset of the year so far, behind gold and European equities, out of a dozen selected assets monitored by BlackRock Investment Institute.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetMediaIllustration\n            inline\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetMediaIllustration\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<figure class=\"\n        media-object-image\n        enlarge-image\n        img-inline\n        article__inset__image\n      \" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><\/p>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<p><strong>Check out:<\/strong> Paul Tudor Jones says stocks likely to finish 2023 higher because Fed is done hiking rates<\/p>\n<h2>Companies in focus<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      Shares of <strong>Newmont Corp. <\/strong><br \/>\n        NEM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205356474\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+2.75%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       rose 2.6% after the company agreed to buy Australian gold and copper producer <strong>Newcrest Mining Ltd. <\/strong><br \/>\n        NCM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203840223\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+1.52%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       for $17.5 billion.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Oneok Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        OKE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205201756\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-8.14%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares fell 8.4% after the company agreed to buy <strong>Magellan Midstream Partners LP <\/strong><br \/>\n        MMP,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207165371\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+14.06%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       for $18.8 billion in cash and stock, which is a 22% premium to Friday\u2019s close.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>3M Co. <\/strong><br \/>\n        MMM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205029460\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.46%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       said Monday it has fired Michael Vale, group president and chief business and country officer, for cause. The dismissal is due to \u201cinappropriate personal conduct and violation of company policy, unrelated to the company\u2019s operations and financial performance,\u201d the company said in a brief statement.
