{"id":89323,"date":"2023-11-30T10:20:09","date_gmt":"2023-11-30T15:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/markets\/dow-climbs-200-points-as-stocks-set-to-cap-off-best-month-in-more-than-a-year\/"},"modified":"2023-11-30T10:20:10","modified_gmt":"2023-11-30T15:20:10","slug":"dow-climbs-200-points-as-stocks-set-to-cap-off-best-month-in-more-than-a-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=89323","title":{"rendered":"Dow climbs 200 points as stocks set to cap off best month in more than a year"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-article__body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0002773262\" role=\"document\">\n<p>The Dow shot higher while the rest of the market wavered between gains and losses early Thursday during the final trading session of what has been a November to remember for investors. <\/p>\n<p>Both the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq Composite are on track for their biggest monthly advance since July, according to FactSet data, while the Dow is headed for it best month since Oct. 2022. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h2>How are stocks trading<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      The S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX<br \/>\n       fell by 4 points, or 0.1%, to 4,546. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA<br \/>\n       gained 196 points, or 0.6%, to 35,623. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The Nasdaq Composite<br \/>\n        COMP<br \/>\n       fell by 40 points, or 0.3%, to 14,217. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On Wednesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 13 points, or 0.04%, to 35,430; the S&amp;P 500  declined 4 points, or 0.09%, to 4,551; and the Nasdaq Composite  dropped 23 points, or 0.16%, to 14,258.<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s driving markets<\/h2>\n<p>U.S. stocks wavered between gains and losses after the open on Thursday, while the Dow powered higher, driven by a more than 8% gain in shares of Salesforce Inc. following a batch of strong quarterly earnings. <\/p>\n<p><strong>See:<\/strong> Salesforce\u2019s stock rises 9% on strong quarterly earnings<\/p>\n<p>Investors also parsed a couple of closely watched economic reports on Thursday.  Investors received yet another report showing inflation continued to ease last month. The core personal-consumption expenditures price index, the Federal Reserve\u2019s preferred gauge of inflation, was up 3.5% year-over-year in October, compared with 3.7% in September. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026[T]his morning\u2019s PCE print underscores that inflationary pressures continue to moderate to the downside, but the questions remains if it will be enough for the Fed to declare a final victory,\u201d said Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist for LPL Financial.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See: <\/strong>PCE Inflation Slips as Expected. The Fed Could Mull Rate Cuts.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, jobless claims continued to tick higher, offering more evidence that the U.S. labor market is cooling. Investors will receive a monthly report on job creation from the Labor Department next week. <\/p>\n<p>Initial jobless claims rose 7,000 to 218,000, in the week ending Nov. 25, the Labor Department said Thursday.\u00a0\u00a0Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had estimated new claims would rise 11,000 to 220,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>See:<\/strong> Jobless claims tick higher in latest week, reaching highest level in 2 years<\/p>\n<p>Easing price pressures in recent months have helped propel the S&amp;P 500 up more than 8.5% in November, its best month in more than a year and its seventh-best month of the last 20 years, according to FactSet data. <\/p>\n<p>Investors also digested comments from New York Fed President John Williams, the latest in a long line of Fed speakers who have made public comments about the central bank\u2019s monetary policy this week. Williams said that the central bank has raised interest rates at or near their peak. <\/p>\n<p><strong>See:<\/strong> Fed\u2019s Williams says interest rates are \u2018at, or near\u2019 peak<\/p>\n<p>Companies reporting results on Thursday included Kroger<br \/>\n        KR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/206215053\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.72%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       TD Bank<br \/>\n        TD,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202133558\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.22%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Cracker Barrel<br \/>\n        CBRL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205921983\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-6.70%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       which reported before the bell.
