has revealed it has recently investigated hundreds of crypto tax violations.<\/p>\n<p>The NTA released its annual report on tax investigations ahead of the weekend, including a section on crypto taxation.<\/p>\n<p>The data in the report, and also reported by Japan\u2019s CoinPost, shows that the agency launched 615 investigations into Japanese residents\u2019 crypto holdings in the financial year 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The NTA noted that it had found tax violations in 548 cases, marking a significant rise from the previous financial year.<\/p>\n<p>In FY2021, the NTA launched 444 crypto-related investigations, uncovering 405 violations.<\/p>\n<p>But there appears to have been a drop in the value of crypto-related tax violations, possibly reflecting a fall in global crypto prices.<\/p>\n<p>NTA added that the average value of undeclared income in crypto-related cases was around $206,000 per case in FY2022, down from $245,000 in FY2021.<\/p>\n<p>The cumulative value of the undeclared income for FY2022 was $126.5 million, up from over $110 million.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" Rise?<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"replacer\"><\/span><br \/>On X, the Japanese crypto analyst <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jeanscpa\/status\/1727270239535353901\" target=\"_blank\">Jeanscpa<\/a>\u00a0claimed that the rise in violations was partly due to an increase in NTA investigations in FY2022.<\/p>\n<p>The analyst noted that the NTA \u201cincreased its number of investigations\u201d into suspected crypto irregularities by \u201capproximately 1.4 times compared to the previous year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeanscpa claimed that the discrepancy was \u201cdue to the coronavirus pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pandemic allegedly saw the NTA slow the rate of its probes, and focus on higher-income individuals.<\/p>\n<p>The analyst claimed that \u201cthe number of tax audits\u201d into crypto holders would \u201cbe similar\u201d in 2023 \u201cor even higher than [FY2022].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese crypto community has repeatedly asked the government to reform the tax system.<\/p>\n<p>Many critics, including politicians and business leaders, claim the current system is unfair.<\/p>\n<p>Crypto is taxed as \u201cother income\u201d in Japan, while in other countries coin-related profits are taxed via capital gains levies.<\/p>\n<p>In other nations, crypto holders\u2019 profits are only taxable when they trade their coins for fiat.<\/p>\n<p>Some lawmakers have tried to convince Tokyo that taxes on crypto are currently \u201ctoo high,\u201d but have thus far failed to sway the government.<\/p>\n<p>Corporations and political leaders claim the system discourages firms from holding coins by taxing unrealized income.<\/p>\n<p>Tokyo has effectively agreed to reform the law for firms, but has thus far refused to consider changing the way it
