{"id":88833,"date":"2023-11-25T22:18:50","date_gmt":"2023-11-26T03:18:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/markets\/crypto\/director-uses-netflix-funds-for-risky-dogecoin-bet\/"},"modified":"2023-11-25T22:18:52","modified_gmt":"2023-11-26T03:18:52","slug":"director-uses-netflix-funds-for-risky-dogecoin-bet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=88833","title":{"rendered":"Director Uses Netflix Funds for Risky Dogecoin Bet"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_136147\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-136147\" style=\"width: 1522px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><noscript><\/noscript><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-136147\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Boxoffice Movie Scenes \/ YouTube<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Carl Erik Rinsch, the director of \u201c47 Ronin,\u201d allegedly used nearly $60 million \u2013 that <strong>Netflix<\/strong> had given him for a sci-fi series \u2013 to invest in the crypto and stock markets.<\/p>\n<p>According to The New York Times, Netflix gave the director more than $55 million, along with a near-total budgetary and creative freedom.<\/p>\n<p>It never got a single finished episode back.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Rinsch reportedly used a large portion of the budget to invest in stocks and cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<p>He then went on to spend millions on cars, furniture, and designer clothing.<\/p>\n<p>The report cited cast, crew members, emails, and court filings in a divorce case brought by Rinsch\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Red Flags\u2019<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"replacer\"><\/span><br \/>Netflix battled other streaming giants for Rinsch\u2019s new show called <em>Organic Intelligent<\/em>, which Netflix renamed to <em>Conquest<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The company agreed to pay $61.2 million in several installments for the rights to the series.<\/p>\n<p>But Netflix ignored several red flags, the report said. A major one is that Rinsch was still fighting <strong>30West<\/strong> and other early investors, which subsequently received $14 million of the $61 million from Netflix under a legal settlement.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2020, Rinsch asked Netflix for more money. By that point, they had already spent $44.3 million and were reluctant to give more as Rinsch had missed several production milestones.<\/p>\n<p>Still, to save the production, Netflix\u00a0sent Rinsch\u2019s production company $11 million. This brought the total to more than $55 million.<\/p>\n<p>However, Rinsch\u2019s behavior \u201cgrew erratic,\u201d the NYT said. He claimed he had discovered Covid-19\u2019s secret transmission mechanism and was able to predict lightning strikes and volcano eruptions.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018God Bless Crypto\u2019<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"replacer\"><\/span><br \/>Rinsch went on to spend the project funds on investments, many of which failed.<\/p>\n<p>This included the <strong>S&amp;P 500<\/strong> index and shares of the biotech firm <strong>Gilead Sciences<\/strong>. He lost $5.9 million in weeks.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2021, Netflix stopped funding <em>Conquest<\/em>.\u00a0Rinsch, however, started using what remained of the $11 million Netflix had sent to bet on crypto.<\/p>\n<p>He transferred more than $4 million to the <strong>Kraken<\/strong> exchange and bought dogecoin (DOGE).<\/p>\n<p>This one paid off, said the NYT, stating that,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhen he liquidated his Dogecoin positions in May 2021, he had a balance of nearly $27 million.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Rinsch wrote in an online chat with a Kraken representative: \u201cThank you and god bless crypto.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He then bought five Rolls-Royces, a Ferrari, a Vacheron Constantin watch, high-end furniture, and designer clothing, totaling $8.7 million.<\/p>\n<p>The legal team of Rinsch\u2019s wife, Gabriela Ros\u00e9s Bentancor, suggested in the divorce proceedings that the buying spree was designed to hide Rinsch\u2019s crypto winnings.<\/p>\n<h2>Aftermath<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"replacer\"><\/span><br \/>Rinsch and Netflix are currently locked in a confidential arbitration proceeding, with a ruling expected soon.<\/p>\n<p>Rinsch claims that Netflix breached their contract and owes him $14 million in damages.<\/p>\n<p>He first argued that the cars and furniture were props for <em>Conquest<\/em>, bought with Netflix\u2019s production money.
