Source: europeancentralbank \/ Instagram<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has revealed that her son endured substantial losses in his investments in cryptocurrencies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">During a town hall\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">event with students in Frankfurt<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Lagarde said that despite her strong criticisms of crypto assets, her son chose to invest in them, disregarding her warnings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cHe ignored me royally, which is his privilege,\u201d she stated. \u201cAnd he lost almost all the money that he had invested.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt wasn\u2019t a lot, but he lost it all, he lost about 60% of it. So when I then had another talk with him about it, he reluctantly accepted that I was right.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lagarde did not specify which of her two sons, both in their mid-30s, had suffered the losses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lagarde has been vocal about her concerns regarding cryptocurrencies, often describing them as speculative and worthless.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">She has also highlighted their potential use in illicit activities by criminals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The ECB, under Lagarde\u2019s leadership, has been advocating for global regulations on crypto assets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The primary objectives of such regulations are to protect unaware consumers from risks associated with cryptocurrencies and to address the potential loopholes that facilitate funding for terrorists and money laundering by criminals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The ECB\u2019s concerns about privately issued currencies potentially displacing government money have prompted the bank to initiate its own digital euro project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, the launch of a digital euro is still years away, as the bank recently entered the \u201cpreparation phase\u201d and expects to take another two years before making a decision on its rollout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lagarde\u2019s personal experience with her son\u2019s losses has reinforced her skepticism towards cryptocurrencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cI have, as you can tell, a very low opinion of cryptos,\u201d she commented.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While acknowledging individuals\u2019 freedom to invest and speculate, Lagarde emphasized the importance of preventing participation in illegal trades and businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Digital Euro Could Take Two More Years<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"replacer\"><\/span><br \/><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Back in September, Lagarde\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">said that a digital Euro pilot<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0\u201cwill probably take us another two years, at least, before it\u2019s the final say.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At the time, she also said that a central bank digital currency (<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">CBDC<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">) will not eradicate cash, nor substitute it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIf it can be user friendly, if it can be free, if it can be a universal digital mode of payment throughout the entire Euro system, I think it will have checked many of the boxes, which I believe would characterize it as success,\u201d she noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lagarde noted that although a lot of work has been done in the last three years in terms of exploring and surveying the Europeans on what they want in terms of a CBDC, \u201cit is not until later in October that the governing council will decide whether we can move ahead with more piloting of the project.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"newsletter home-newsletter single\">\n<div class=\"left-side\">\n<p>\n        <em><br \/>\n            Enter your email for our Free Daily Newsletter        <\/em>\n    <\/p>\n<p> A quick 3min read about today&#8217;s crypto news!<\/p>\n<p>    <span class=\"response-msg\" id=\"newsletter-response\"><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptonews.com\/news\/ecb-president-christine-lagarde-says-her-son-lost-almost-all-money-he-invested-in-crypto.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Christine Lagarde.
