Here is what typically happens next."},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-article__body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0002723743\" role=\"document\">\n<p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average notched its first \u201cdeath cross\u201d since March 2022 on Monday, in what some have described as the latest ominous development for stocks as the market looks to extend  its November rebound rally. <\/p>\n<p>This time around, two straight sessions in the green weren\u2019t enough to keep the Dow out of death-cross territory, as the market\u2019s recent three-month losing streak weighed on the blue-chip index\u2019s 50-day moving average, while gains from earlier this year helped boost the 200-day moving average. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p>The Dow<br \/>\n        DJIA<br \/>\n       closed at 34,337.87 on Monday, according to FactSet data, up 54.77 points, or 0.2%, at 34,337.87. <\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetMediaIllustration\n            inline\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetMediaIllustration\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<p>          <!-- eventually when we know what this card will be we can change it and leave this one --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"\n        media-object-image\n        enlarge-image\n        img-inline\n        article__inset__image\n      \" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><\/p>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<p>A death cross occurs when the 50-day moving average, considered by market technicians as a proxy for an asset\u2019s short-term trend, falls below the 200-day moving average, a proxy for the longer-term trend.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts had warned about a looming death cross for the Dow as recently as late last month, with David Rosenberg, president of Rosenberg Research, describing the prospect as \u201cuber bearish\u201d for stocks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See:<\/strong> Dow edging closer to bearish \u2018death cross\u2019 signal: What it would mean for stocks<\/p>\n<p>Although typically interpreted as a bearish signal, some technicians argue that death crosses actually signal buying opportunities during bull markets, as they have at times appeared right around market bottoms, as\u00a0previously noted by MarketWatch\u2019s Tomi Kilgore.
