{"id":83864,"date":"2023-11-13T05:24:26","date_gmt":"2023-11-13T10:24:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/markets\/sp-500-futures-dip-after-strong-run-as-inflation-data-looms\/"},"modified":"2023-11-13T05:24:27","modified_gmt":"2023-11-13T10:24:27","slug":"sp-500-futures-dip-after-strong-run-as-inflation-data-looms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=83864","title":{"rendered":"S&#038;P 500 futures dip after strong run as inflation data looms"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-article__body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0002720417\" role=\"document\">\n<p>U.S. stock futures were slipping early Monday ahead of important inflation data in coming days.<\/p>\n<h2>How are stock-index futures trading<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      S&amp;P 500 futures<br \/>\n        ES00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209948968\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.26%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       dipped 10 points, or 0.2% to 4420<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Dow Jones Industrial Average futures<br \/>\n        YM00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210407078\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.08%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       fell 22 points, or 0% to 34314<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Nasdaq 100 futures<br \/>\n        NQ00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210219788\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.33%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       eased 53 points, or 0.3% to 15543<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA<br \/>\n       rose 391 points, or 1.15%, to 34283, the S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX<br \/>\n       increased 68 points, or 1.56%, to 4415, and the Nasdaq Composite<br \/>\n        COMP<br \/>\n       gained 277 points, or 2.05%, to 13798.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h2>What\u2019s driving markets<\/h2>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 has jumped 7.2% over the past two weeks, helped by benchmark borrowing costs<br \/>\n        BX:TMUBMUSD10Y<br \/>\n       falling swiftly from 16-year highs on hopes that recent softer jobs data means inflation can ease further and the Federal Reserve has thus finished its campaign of interest rate rises.<\/p>\n<p>However, after that strong rally a more cautious tone prevails at the start of the new week as the market awaits a U.S. consumer price index report for October, due Tuesday, that thus has the heft to underpin the latest bull run or bring it to a halt.<\/p>\n<p>Core CPI growth \u2014 which strips out volatile items such as food and energy \u2014 is expected to remain steady at 0.3% month-on-month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe consumer price index stands as the focal point for investors this week, with anticipation building for the next market-moving event,\u201d said Stephen Innes, managing partner at SPI Asset Management.<\/p>\n<p>The producer prices report for October will be published on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the reticent mood early Monday was anxiety about another looming U.S. budget deadline \u2014 an issue that contributed to Moody\u2019s Investors Service late Friday cutting its outlook on the U.S. sovereign credit rating to negative from stable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis week, we will plunge back into the U.S. political saga, as the government short-term funding deadline is due 17th of November and not much progress has been made to seal a fresh deal,\u201d said Ipek Ozkardeskaya, senior analyst at Swissquote Bank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDepending on the new funding resolution \u2013 or the lack thereof \u2013 we could see the U.S. 10-year yield return above 4.80%,\u201d Ozkardeskaya added.<\/p>\n<p>Investors will also be keeping an eye out for a slew of earnings reports from retailers, including Home Depot<br \/>\n        HD,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208081807\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.29%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       on Tuesday, Target<br \/>\n        TGT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207799045\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.44%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       on Wednesday and Walmart<br \/>\n        WMT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207374728\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.38%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       on Thursday. Their comments on the health of the consumer may also play into thinking on the Fed.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the earnings season in general should have provided fundamental support to investor sentiment, according to analysts. \u201cFor Q3 2023, with 92% of S&amp;P 500 companies reporting actual results, 81%\u2026have reported a positive earnings per share surprise and 61%\u2026have reported a positive revenue surprise,\u201d said John Butters, senior earnings analyst at Factset.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. federal budget update for October will be published at 2 p.m. Eastern.
