{"id":83474,"date":"2023-11-11T19:15:40","date_gmt":"2023-11-12T00:15:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/markets\/crypto\/crypto-exchange-kraken-helps-uk-police-return-2-million-to-scam-victims\/"},"modified":"2023-11-11T19:15:44","modified_gmt":"2023-11-12T00:15:44","slug":"crypto-exchange-kraken-helps-uk-police-return-2-million-to-scam-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=83474","title":{"rendered":"Crypto Exchange Kraken Helps UK Police Return $2 Million to Scam Victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_129759\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-129759\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><noscript><\/noscript><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-129759\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Adobe \/ Matteo Benegiamo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Crypto exchange Kraken has partnered with the UK\u2019s South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU) to return nearly \u00a32 million ($2.4 million) worth of stolen crypto to victims of a scam.<\/p>\n<p>Following the arrest of 40-year-old Dutch national Wybo Wiersma, who illicitly transferred IOTA tokens using a fraudulent website designed to generate fake seed phrases, SEROCU seized \u00a32.37 million in crypto.<\/p>\n<p>It is the first time the Proceeds of Crime Act has been used to make such a crypto exchange seizure in the UK, a recent announcement from SEROCU said.<\/p>\n<p>SEROCU also shared the news of the upcoming repayment on X, along with a picture of the now-sentenced Wiersma:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udcb8 Millions to be paid back to victims\ud83d\udcb8 <\/p>\n<p>Almost \u00a32m worth of stolen cryptocurrency is to be paid back to victims of theft as a result of work by SEROCU.<\/p>\n<p>It follows the sentencing of Wybo Wiersma earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>More here \u27a1\ufe0f  https:\/\/t.co\/GVrripF7fg <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rsh69enmPn\">pic.twitter.com\/rsh69enmPn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 SEROCU (@SouthEastROCU) <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SouthEastROCU\/status\/1722545908397514848?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 9, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In court, Wiersma was ordered to pay \u00a32.1 million, with Kraken\u2019s assistance reportedly instrumental in converting the seized crypto into back into British pounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe victims, of which there are many across the world, have patiently waited for five years for this to happen and it is thanks to my team\u2019s innovation and collaboration, particularly with Kraken, without whom this may not have been possible,\u201d Detective Inspector Rob Bryant of SEROCU\u2019s Cyber Crime and Cryptocurrency Unit, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<h2>Awareness about scams important for crypto adoption<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"replacer\"><\/span><br \/>Lana Sinelnikova, Kraken\u2019s UK Head of Compliance, emphasized the importance of industry collaboration, urging awareness about potential crypto scams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScammers always find new ways to exploit their victims, and will continue to use these tactics until they prove unsuccessful.
