{"id":82181,"date":"2023-11-08T12:05:22","date_gmt":"2023-11-08T17:05:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/markets\/crypto\/crypto-based-streaming-site-odysee-a-haven-for-extremists-southern-poverty-law-center-claims\/"},"modified":"2023-11-08T12:05:30","modified_gmt":"2023-11-08T17:05:30","slug":"crypto-based-streaming-site-odysee-a-haven-for-extremists-southern-poverty-law-center-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=82181","title":{"rendered":"Crypto-based Streaming Site Odysee a \u201cHaven\u201d for Extremists, Southern Poverty Law Center Claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><noscript><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>The blockchain based video-streaming site, Odysee, finds itself in hot water this morning following a detailed report by the Southern Poverty Law Commission that claimed the website is a hub for \u201chate groups and extremists.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>A \u201cHaven\u201d for Extremism<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"replacer\"><\/span><br \/>In the Southern Poverty Law Center\u2019s Digital Threat Report released Tuesday, the nonprofit argues that \u201cOdysee has become a haven for individuals to store and create video content that would not be allowed on more mainstream platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the Digital Threat Report claims that sites like Odysee become a \u201cdumping ground for extremist and hateful content\u201d by enabling \u201cextremist and hateful behavior by providing money-making opportunities or valuable technical features.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Based entirely on blockchain technology, Odysee is an offshoot of the recently-shuttered content-sharing site, LBRY. Users can post videos with potentially harmful or inflammatory material with little risk of losing access to the platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>LBRY founder, Jeremy Kaufman, once claimed that the company had \u201cthe most censorship-resistant system to ever exist for the purpose of publishing digital content.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Odysee is considered to be an Alt-tech site, many of which espouse traditionally censored beliefs due to limited moderation of content. Kaufman himself ran for U.S. Senate in 2022 as a member of the Libertarian party and is a member of the far-right Mises Caucus.<\/p>\n<h2>Funding Hate?<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"replacer\"><\/span><br \/>Equally important, content creators can receive payments from their monetized videos in the form of LBRY\u2019s cryptocurrency, LBRY Credits. Similarly, users can pay for subscriptions or donate \u201ctips\u201d to their favorite content creators.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Southern Poverty Law Center claims that these features, combined with the company\u2019s \u201cfree speech\u201d ethos, make Odysee a \u201cpopular\u201d platform for those \u201cwho have been removed from other sites for violating hate speech and other harmful behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fugitive Robert Warren \u201cAzzmador\u201d Ray, wanted for his role in the participation and organization of the deadly Charlottesville \u201cUnite the Right\u201d rally in 2017, maintains a successful presence on Odysee. Despite being on the lam, Ray has earned over $30,000 in just tip-style donations, dubbed \u201cHyperchats,\u201d on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, The Nordic Resistance Movement, a neo-nazi movement with chapters in Sweden, Finland, and Norway, boasts an english-language channel on the platform. The Southern Poverty Law Center claims that this channel in particular is \u201cdesigned for distributing propaganda.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Troubling Times<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"replacer\"><\/span><br \/>The Southern Poverty Law Center\u2019s Digital Threat Report comes on the heels of LBRY\u2019s shutdown following a lawsuit from the Securities and Exchange Commission that detailed the company\u2019s failure to register its LBRY Credits. <\/p>\n<p>The defunct platform originally faced a $22 million penalty to the S.E.C., which was ultimately reduced to just a little over $111,000.
