{"id":77500,"date":"2023-10-27T12:13:53","date_gmt":"2023-10-27T16:13:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/investing\/walmart-keeps-head-above-water-in-china-as-local-supermarkets-eat-themselves-alive\/"},"modified":"2023-10-27T12:13:56","modified_gmt":"2023-10-27T16:13:56","slug":"walmart-keeps-head-above-water-in-china-as-local-supermarkets-eat-themselves-alive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=77500","title":{"rendered":"Walmart keeps head above water in China as local supermarkets eat themselves alive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Supermarket chains in China are having a rough go of it.<\/p>\n<p>There was a sign of relief last year when China dropped its draconian COVID movement restrictions, with observers expecting a surge in shoppers flocking to big-box stores after being confined to their homes for months on end.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The reasons range from evolving consumer preferences to e-commerce to infighting among partnered firms.<\/p>\n<p>So far this year, retail sales for China\u2019s supermarkets have fallen by 0.4% vs. comparable 2022 figures, despite a 6.8% rise overall for consumer goods during the same period, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.<\/p>\n<p>The consumer sector has been buoyed particularly by services over the past few months, with solid growth in hospitality and catering, IT and software, transport, warehousing, postal services, and financial services.<\/p>\n<p>Eight of China\u2019s 13 publicly traded supermarket operators either lost money or saw their revenues decline in the first half of this year, according to company financial filings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Growth is either negative or in the single digits for department stores and chain convenience stores, as well.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, online retail sales are up 11.6% in the first nine months this year, according to data from the statistics bureau.<\/p>\n<p>Carrefour China had 260 stores in 2017, making it the then-largest supermarket chain in the country. That number had shrunk to 150 by the end of 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve witnessed the decline of Carrefour in my hometown,\u201d said 28-year-old Yang Lihua, who lives and works in the western metropolis of Chengdu. \u201cThe store now seems half empty of goods and mostly empty of customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carrefour, like the other Chinese supermarket operators to which MarketWatch reached, declined to provide comment.<\/p>\n<p>Carrefour China\u2019s decline from 2017 onward began with its being unprepared for the rapid rise of e-commerce giants Alibaba Group Holding<br \/>\n        BABA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201948298\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.64%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n<p>        9988,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/215112034\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+3.32%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and JD.com<br \/>\n        JD,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205122565\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.16%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n<p>        9618,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/218934055\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+3.36%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       which leaped into the space under their own labels and with significant investments in existing sellers.<\/p>\n<p>Things only worsened.<\/p>\n<p>The pandemic hit, striking bricks-and-mortar Carrefour particularly hard.<\/p>\n<p>The company is now in a legal battle with Chinese conglomerate Suning, which had been operating stores under the Carrefour banner after buying an 80% stake in the French retailer\u2019s China business for $656 million in 2019.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"wrap\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetMediaIllustration\n            wrap\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetMediaIllustration\n            article__inset--wrap\n  \"><\/p>\n<p>          <!-- eventually when we know what this card will be we can change it and leave this one --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"\n        media-object-image\n        enlarge-image\n        img-wrap\n        article__inset__image\n      \" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom:66.82316118935837%;\" data-subtype=\"photo\" class=\"image-container  responsive-media article__inset__image__image\"><\/div>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<p>Things went awry when Carrefour exercised a put option requiring Suning to buy the remaining 20% \u2014 which it has failed to do, according to Hong Kong court documents.<\/p>\n<p>Rivals haven\u2019t fared much better.<\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s largest operator of supermarkets, Sun Art Retail<br \/>\n        SURRY,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201342093\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-4.10%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n<p>        6808,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203486761\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+3.18%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       which runs the popular RT-Mart chain, bled more than $100 million in cash in 2022, despite Alibaba\u2019s upping its stake to 72% from 36%. It has since slashed expenses and is back in the black, company filings show.<\/p>\n<p>Better Life<br \/>\n        1805,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202153251\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-2.55%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       \u2014 which lost $61 million in the first half of this year \u2014 has faced worker protests around the country after it allegedly failed to compensate employees when it closed a number of stores.<\/p>\n<p>Losses for Lianhua Supermarket Holdings<br \/>\n        980,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205198498\/delayed\" class=\"\"><\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       this year have only exacerbated its roughly 80% stock-price decline since 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Walmart<br \/>\n        WMT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207374728\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.45%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       which has been in China since 1996, has had more mixed results.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the last few years, it began selling off most of its overseas operations, including those in Japan, the U.K. and Brazil. Sam\u2019s Club is set to have 48 locations across China by the end of the year and had 4 million members by December 2022, according to company documents.<\/p>\n<p>Sam\u2019s Club rival Costco<br \/>\n        COST,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201191698\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.51%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       hopes to open its sixth store in China by year\u2019s end.<\/p>\n<p>But in MarketWatch conversations with nearly a dozen Chinese consumers, many cited specialization among smaller stores as their reason for eschewing traditional supermarkets that are now struggling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI order meals from restaurants in my district and groceries from smaller shops nearby,\u201d said Chen Gang, who works from home for a tech startup in Beijing.
