{"id":76310,"date":"2023-10-24T14:44:56","date_gmt":"2023-10-24T18:44:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/markets\/dow-higher-as-earnings-season-rolls-on-with-microsoft-and-alphabet-ahead\/"},"modified":"2023-10-24T14:45:00","modified_gmt":"2023-10-24T18:45:00","slug":"dow-higher-as-earnings-season-rolls-on-with-microsoft-and-alphabet-ahead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=76310","title":{"rendered":"Dow higher as earnings season rolls on with Microsoft and Alphabet ahead"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-article__body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0002648231\" role=\"document\">\n<p>U.S. stocks were trading higher Tuesday afternoon, but off the session\u2019s best levels, helped by stronger than expected results from several blue chip companies with earnings reports from Alphabet and Microsoft due after the close. <\/p>\n<h2>How stocks are trading<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      The Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA<br \/>\n       rose 153 points, or 0.5%, to 33,091<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX<br \/>\n       added 18.6 points, or 0.4%, to 4,235<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The Nasdaq Composite<br \/>\n        COMP<br \/>\n      climbed 68 points, or 0.5%, to 13,087<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 191 points, or 0.58%, to 32936, the S&amp;P 500 declined 7 points, or 0.17%, to 4217, while the Nasdaq Composite  gained 35 points, or 0.27%, to 13018.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h2>What\u2019s driving markets<\/h2>\n<p>The Dow may break a four-day losing streak with help from earnings reports.    <\/p>\n<p>Coca-Cola<br \/>\n        KO,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209159848\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+3.15%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       General Electric<br \/>\n        GE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208495069\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+6.58%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       3M<br \/>\n        MMM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205029460\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+4.91%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and General Motors<br \/>\n        GM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205226835\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.22%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       were among the companies releasing results before the opening bell. After the close, Microsoft<br \/>\n        MSFT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207732364\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.45%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Alphabet<br \/>\n        GOOGL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202490156\/lastsale\" class=\"positive\">+1.71%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Visa<br \/>\n        V,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203660239\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.63%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Texas Instruments<br \/>\n        TXN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202237907\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.09%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n        will release their earnings. <\/p>\n<p>About 30% of S&amp;P 500 companies are slated to report this week, with the earnings season so far been better than Wall Street expected. About 23% of S&amp;P 500 companies have already reported earnings, and 77% of them have posted earnings surpassing analysts\u2019 expectations, according to FactSet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all about earnings,\u201d in Tuesday\u2019s trading day, said Kent Engelke, chief economic strategist and managing director at Capitol Securities Management. What\u2019s especially reassuring for investors is what companies are \u2014 and are not \u2014 saying in their forward guidance, he noted. \u201cWe\u2019re not reading about inflation killing margins. The forward-looking statements aren\u2019t like \u2018this is it and tomorrow is going to be bad,\u201d Engelke said. <\/p>\n<p>Louis Navellier, chairman and founder of Navellier &amp; Associates, said Tuesday that \u201cif the rest of the\u00a0earnings\u00a0season goes as well as early announcements\u00a0have gone, especially by consumer-facing companies,\u00a0we will be well positioned for a decent Christmas rally going into year-end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read also:<\/strong> Alphabet earnings: What to expect from the Google parent<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in U.S. economic data the S&amp;P flash U.S. services-sector index increased to 50.9, up from 50.1, to a three-month high. The S&amp;P U.S. manufacturing-sector index reached 50, up from 49.8 or a six month high. Numbers above 50 signal expansion in a sector. <\/p>\n<p><strong>See<\/strong>:  U.S. economy gets off to good start in the fourth quarter, S&amp;P finds, as inflation cools<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSentiment has improved in part due to hopes of interest rates having peaked, something which looks increasingly likely given the further cooling of inflationary pressures,\u201d said Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Investors remain wary of the Treasury market though. <\/p>\n<p>The 10-year Treasury yield<br \/>\n        BX:TMUBMUSD10Y<br \/>\n       stood at 4.846% Tuesday afternoon, up from a one-week low of 4.836% on Monday afternoon, but not before breaching the 5% mark  on Monday. <\/p>\n<p>The Monday retreat in yields came after Bill Ackman, manager of hedge fund Pershing Square, said he had closed his bet against 30-year Treasury bonds because \u201cthere is too much risk in the world to remain short bonds at current long-term rates,\u201d and because \u201cthe economy is slowing faster than recent data suggests.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Former Pimco bond chief Bill Gross also juiced the bond market rally by saying he expected a U.S. recession to begin by the end of the year and he was making bets interest rates would fall to reflect that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSupply demand imbalances have everyone focused on how demand is holding up from these Treasury auctions,\u201d said Edward Moya, Senior Market Analyst at Oanda. \u201cNext week\u2019s Treasury refunding announcement could be important as they could reduce auctions at the long end of the curve as they are concerned about the recent moves with yields.\u00a0\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Reviving an equity rally may require not just further declines in yields but also additional support from the ongoing third quarter corporate earnings reporting season analysts said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverall, I suspect that a bottoming in both equities and Treasuries will be a process this week, and the fact that 1\/3 of the S&amp;P 500 reports earnings this week might help to aid in stabilization,\u201d said Mark Newton, head of technical strategy at Fundstrat.<\/p>\n<h2>Companies in focus<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      <strong>General Motors Co. <\/strong><br \/>\n        GM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205226835\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.22%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares are 1.5% lower. The car maker blew past earnings estimates for the third quarter. Meanwhile, the United Auto Workers  announced it was expanding a strike to include GM\u2019s truck plant in Arlington, Texas.  <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>General Electric Co.<\/strong><br \/>\n        GE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208495069\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+6.58%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       rose 6.7% Tuesday, after the company posted better-than-expected third-quarter earnings and raised its guidance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Coca-Cola Co.<\/strong>\u00a0<br \/>\n        KO,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209159848\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+3.15%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       climbed 2.8% Tuesday, after the beverage giant beat third-quarter profit expectations and provided an upbeat outlook, as unit case volume returned to growth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Verizon Communications Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        VZ,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/204980236\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+8.54%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       upped its free-cash-flow expectations for the year, and shares of the telecommunications company were headed about 8.8% higher in Tuesday\u2019s trading.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Halliburton Co.\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n        HAL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210488727\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.50%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       slipped 2.3% toward a three-day losing streak Tuesday, after the oil services company topped third-quarter profit expectations but came up a bit short on revenue, amid weakness in North America.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>3M Co.<\/strong>\u00a0<br \/>\n        MMM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205029460\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+4.91%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       bounced 4.4% Tuesday, after the consumer, industrial and health care-products company swung to a third-quarter loss due to $4.2 billion\u00a0settlement of Combat Arms earplugs litigation, but reported adjusted profit that was well above expectations and raised its full-year outlook.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2014 Jamie Chisholm contributed. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/s-p-500-futures-gain-as-treasury-yields-fall-further-microsoft-and-alphabet-earnings-loom-d99eb7f1?mod=markets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. stocks were trading higher Tuesday afternoon, but off the session\u2019s best levels, helped by stronger than expected results from several blue chip companies with earnings reports from Alphabet and Microsoft due after the close.
