{"id":75039,"date":"2023-10-20T21:00:13","date_gmt":"2023-10-21T01:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/markets\/inflation-is-following-an-eerily-similar-path-as-the-one-taken-in-1966-1982\/"},"modified":"2023-10-20T21:00:16","modified_gmt":"2023-10-21T01:00:16","slug":"inflation-is-following-an-eerily-similar-path-as-the-one-taken-in-1966-1982","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=75039","title":{"rendered":"Inflation is following an \u2018eerily similar\u2019 path as the one taken in 1966-1982"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-article__body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0002642206\" role=\"document\">\n<p>Inflation has been full of surprises throughout its three-year climb in the U.S., yet one thing that apparently hasn\u2019t changed is its overall path when compared with what it did between 1966 and 1982. <\/p>\n<p>A chart of the year-over-year change in the consumer price index shows headline inflation is basically taking an \u201ceerily similar\u201d track as the one it took more than four decades ago, according to Alejandra Grindal, chief economist, and London Stockton, research analyst, at Sarasota, Fla.-based Ned Davis Research. <\/p>\n<p>The absolute levels of the CPI year-on-year changes look much different between the two periods \u2014 with inflation going well above 10% in the 1970s and 1980s, but only peaking this time around at 9.1% last June. In both periods, however, inflation subsequently fell off and was followed by trouble out of the Middle East. An Arab oil embargo in the 1970s imposed on the U.S. and a handful of other countries gave way to a second round of inflation later that decade and into the early 1980s. This time around, Iran\u2019s foreign minister has called for Islamic countries to boycott Israel, including stopping oil shipments.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetMediaIllustration\n            inline\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetMediaIllustration\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<p>          <!-- eventually when we know what this card will be we can change it and leave this one --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"\n        media-object-image\n        enlarge-image\n        img-inline\n        article__inset__image\n      \" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><\/p>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<p>In a note on Friday, Grindal and Stockton said that while they don\u2019t expect inflation to retest its 2022 highs, \u201cthat doesn\u2019t mean inflation is headed for a clear path downward, as there are both near-term and long-term risks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chief among the near-term risks is the possibility that Israel\u2019s war on Hamas spirals out of control and engulfs the Middle East region. <\/p>\n<p>Rania\u00a0Gule, a market analyst for  global multi-asset broker XS.com<strong>,<\/strong> said escalating Middle East developments will impact natural-gas prices and gas prices could increase in the near term if the U.S. is drawn into war. And at BCA Research, headquartered in Montreal, some of the scenarios being contemplated for 2024 are the possibility that oil prices could shoot above $130 a barrel to as high as $160 a barrel, although this isn\u2019t BCA Research\u2019s base-case forecast.<\/p>\n<p>See also: 70% chance Israel-Hamas war spreads beyond Gaza, threatening oil, strategist warns and Why financial markets may be unprepared for a fourth-quarter \u2018inflation surprise\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The annual U.S. headline CPI inflation rate came in at 3.7% for September, down from the 9.1% peak seen last June, and has remained above 3% for four straight months \u2014 proving to be more stubborn than many had expected.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, oil prices scored back-to-back weekly gains as the Middle East threatened to spill over. All three major U.S. stock indexes<br \/>\n        DJIA<\/p>\n<p>        SPX<\/p>\n<p>        COMP<br \/>\n       finished lower.
