\n <\/fbs-ticker> is coming clean on its Scope 3 emissions, emissions produced, say, by suppliers and vendors, who lie outside the companies\u2019 immediate operations, impact. The EV\u2019s Scope 3 emissions accounted for more than 30.1 million metric tons of CO2 battery supply chain. Most of Tesla\u2019s emissions come from chemical processing of lithium, nickel and cobalt. As the company starts to report its Scope 3 emissions, which are both harder to account for and easier to disavow. Could Africa\u2019s large supply of cobalt become the Achilles heel for Tesla\u2019s expansion ambitions?<\/p>\n

The Breakdown You Need To Know:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Conventional gas-powered vehicles produce the majority of their carbon emissions from their tailpipes. Electric vehicles like Tesla\u2019s produce far lower volumes of CO2 emissions in the course of driving. Instead, their emissions from sources like cobalt come about deeper in their production and supply chains.<\/p>\n

Elon Musk previously just told CultureBanx, \u201cWe use less than 3% cobalt in our batteries. Though he didn\u2019t clarify the exact strategy for getting cobalt out of Tesla\u2019s batteries altogether.<\/p>\n

There is high demand for Africa\u2019s cobalt as 71% of the world\u2019s cobalt supply comes from Democratic Republic of Congo, according to a Global Cobalt Dining report. A Morgan Stanley

\n <\/fbs-ticker> report projected as many as 1 billion electric vehicles could be on the road worldwide by 2050.<\/p>\n

Cobalt Culture:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The production of cobalt in the U.S. is pretty low at just 650 metric tons in 2022 and they are the world\u2019s 12th-largest producer of cobalt, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. With 130,000 tonnes of cobalt produced in 2022, the Democratic Republic of the Congo was the world’s largest source of mined cobalt and it\u2019s clear how important the region is for Tesla.<\/p>\n

What makes cobalt so valuable to EVs? This is where it gets a bit technical. The cathodes in lithium-ion batteries typically used in EVs are made of metal oxides that contain a combination of cobalt and other elements. Cobalt allows the cathodes to focus immense power in a confined space. Simply put, without the element\u2019s energy density batteries without cobalt tend to perform worse.<\/p>\n

Situational Awareness:<\/strong><\/p>\n

As the EV sector attempts to move from niche market status to mainstream acceptance, cobalt demand is surging since it\u2019s one of the main components in these car batteries. While Tesla\u2019s report did not explicitly state plans to move away from cobalt, it at least acknowledged a need to include more emissions data across the board. \u201cWe recognize that we can no longer assume that a missing data point should equate to zero emissions,\u201d according to Tesla\u2019s report.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
