{"id":69313,"date":"2023-10-06T02:13:23","date_gmt":"2023-10-06T06:13:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/markets\/crypto\/south-korean-debt-collectors-coming-for-crypto\/"},"modified":"2023-10-06T02:13:27","modified_gmt":"2023-10-06T06:13:27","slug":"south-korean-debt-collectors-coming-for-crypto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=69313","title":{"rendered":"South Korean Debt Collectors Coming for Crypto"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>South Korean debt collectors are now seizing crypto in insolvency cases \u2013 and may soon be granted even more power to confiscate coins.<\/p>\n<p>Per Hanguk Kyungjae, the Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC), a firm that operates under the Financial Services Commission (FSC), has begun \u201cseizing cryptoassets for the first time\u201d this year.<\/p>\n<p>The KDIC typically gets involved in public and private insolvency cases.<\/p>\n<p>It often intervenes when bankrupt individuals and firms declare an inability to repay depositors.<\/p>\n<p>It also offers deposit insurance programs for businesses of all sizes.<\/p>\n<p>The KDIC submitted data at the request of MP Kim Han-gyu, a member of the National Assembly\u2019s Political Affairs Committee.<\/p>\n<p>The data shows that the KDIC identified crypto holdings in 29 insolvency cases in the first half of 2023.<\/p>\n<p>And in 16 cases, the debt collection agency \u201ccompleted seizure measures,\u201d confiscating over $7,400 worth of coins.<\/p>\n<p>The move follows recent regulatory changes that allow the KDIC to request data from banks that work with domestic crypto exchanges.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, the KDIC was only allowed to issue such requests to traditional financial companies, such as banks, securities operators, and insurance companies.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Firms and individuals in insolvency cases were thus able to \u201chide\u201d funds by trading them for crypto and holding them in crypto exchange wallets, the media outlet explained.<\/p>\n<p>As of September 2021, exchanges operating in the fiat won market were legally required to link customer wallets to real-name and social security number-verified domestic bank accounts.<\/p>\n<p>This measure has effectively eliminated anonymous crypto trading on domestic platforms.<\/p>\n<p>And it has also allowed agencies like the KDIC to create workarounds.<\/p>\n<p>The debt collector can now ask crypto exchange partner banks to hand over account details in insolvency cases.<\/p>\n<h2>South Korean Debt Collectors to Gain More Crypto Powers?<\/h2>\n<p>The media outlet explained that the KDIC will likely gain even more power in this regard in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>MPs have \u201cproposed\u201d a bill in the National Assembly that would grant investigators the right to demand customer data from crypto exchanges.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers feel, the media outlet wrote, that \u201cas methods of hiding assets become more sophisticated, the power of monitoring agencies needs to be expanded accordingly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report concluded that \u201cthe quantity of cryptoassets seized\u201d in insolvency cases was \u201cexpected to increase in the future\u201d as KDIC officers become more experienced in crypto collection.<\/p>\n<p>Critics have recently claimed that South Korea\u2019s crypto policies are becoming ever more restrictive at a time when the nation\u2019s biggest economic rival Japan is looking to deregulate.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptonews.com\/news\/south-korean-debt-collectors-coming-for-crypto-holders.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Korean debt collectors are now seizing crypto in insolvency cases \u2013 and may soon be granted even more power to confiscate coins.
