{"id":62679,"date":"2023-09-18T19:25:14","date_gmt":"2023-09-18T23:25:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/markets\/u-s-stocks-eke-out-gains-as-investors-await-fed-meeting-this-week\/"},"modified":"2023-09-18T19:25:17","modified_gmt":"2023-09-18T23:25:17","slug":"u-s-stocks-eke-out-gains-as-investors-await-fed-meeting-this-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=62679","title":{"rendered":"U.S. stocks eke out gains as investors await Fed meeting this week"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-article__body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0002514568\" role=\"document\">\n<p>Stocks finished barely higher on Monday as investors awaited the outcome of this week\u2019s Federal Reserve meeting.<\/p>\n<h2>What happened<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      The Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA<br \/>\n       ended up by 6.06 points at 34,624.30 after largely giving up an almost 107-point gain from earlier in the day.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX<br \/>\n       advanced 3.21 points, or less than 0.1%, to 4,453.53.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The Nasdaq Composite<br \/>\n        COMP<br \/>\n       rose just 1.9 points to 13,710.24.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq have finished higher five of the past seven trading sessions, while Dow industrials have done so two of the past three sessions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h2>What drove markets<\/h2>\n<p>Stocks failed to hold on to much of their earlier gains on Monday, as investors looked toward a busy week of central-bank action. However, the S&amp;P 500\u2019s information-technology sector still finished up by 0.5% \u2014 outpacing the gains seen for the big three equity indexes.<\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 had dropped 1.2% on Friday after last week\u2019s stronger-than-expected economic data, along with rising oil prices, raised concerns that inflation might stay stubbornly above the Federal Reserve\u2019s 2% target. <\/p>\n<p>While the Fed is likely to hold rates steady in the current range of 5.25%-5.5% on Wednesday, policy makers \u201cwould be well-advised to move forward with additional rate hikes this year to tackle the still-elevated levels of inflation\u201d given the recent uptick in price gains, said economist Lauren Henderson of Stifel, Nicolaus &amp; Co. in Chicago. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the Fed is serious and wanting to maintain its credibility with the markets, then it would be in the Fed\u2019s best interest to move forward with at least one rate hike and possibly two before the start of the new year,\u201d she told MarketWatch.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. crude-oil futures<br \/>\n        CL.1,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/211629951\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+0.84%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       settled above $90 a barrel on Monday, the most expensive since at least November, stoking worries about the potential inflationary impact as well as a drag on growth. The recent rise in energy prices is likely to be reflected in inflation data in coming months and to complicate the Fed\u2019s job, according to Henderson.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See<\/strong>: Janet Yellen says she expects soaring oil prices to stabilize<\/p>\n<p>Clues to how central banks view these developments will be provided this week. The Federal Reserve will deliver its policy decision on Wednesday, followed by the Bank of England on Thursday and the Bank of Japan on Friday (local times).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong>\u00a0U.S. economy is trending in the Fed\u2019s direction, so expect Powell to tread carefully next week<\/p>\n<p>Although the expectations are for no move by the Fed, \u201cwhat could move the markets would be any unexpected changes in the language of the statement or the Summary of Economic Projections, which would be in the rate or inflation projections,\u201d said Scott Buchta, the Franklin, Tenn.-based head of fixed-income strategy at Brean Capital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not expecting any major changes to come out of this,\u201d Buchta said. \u201cHowever, now that policy makers are at or near the end of their rate-hike cycle, they\u2019re going to set up the expectations and messaging for the market over the next year or two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the Fed\u2019s projections are still likely to show one more rate hike this year, but the \u201cinteresting thing\u201d will be if the prior forecast for four quarter-point rate cuts in 2024 remains in place or \u201cif you get an unexpected change there that could move markets.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong>See: <\/strong>Powell could still hammer U.S. stocks on Wednesday even if the Fed doesn\u2019t hike interest rates<\/p>\n<p>The stocks of the Big Three automakers \u2014 General Motors Co.<br \/>\n        GM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205226835\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.80%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Ford Motor Co.<br \/>\n        F,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208911460\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.14%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Chrysler owner Stellantis NV<br \/>\n        STLA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/204248628\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.61%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       \u2014 finished lower Monday, as workers continued their strike for higher pay and other benefits. The strike started early Friday after the carmakers failed to reach an agreement with the United Auto Workers union. Tesla Inc. shares<br \/>\n        TSLA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203558040\/lastsale\" class=\"negative\">-3.32%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       finished 3.3% lower after failing to find the support that had been expected from the strike.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Live blog: <\/strong>UAW set to resume talks with Ford, GM, Stellantis<\/p>\n<p>Home builder confidence fell in September to the lowest level in five months as buyer demand waned on the back of persistently high mortgage rates. The National Association of Home Builders\u2019 monthly confidence index fell 5 points in September, to 45.<\/p>\n<h2>Companies in focus<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      <strong>Apple Inc<\/strong>.<br \/>\n        AAPL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202934861\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.69%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares ended up by 1.7% after the iPhone maker released its big software update, iOS 17.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      U.S.-listed shares of chip-design company <strong>ARM Holdings PLC<\/strong><br \/>\n        ARM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/248039114\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-4.53%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       closed down by 4.5% after last week\u2019s successful trading debut.
