Google plans to cut back on roles in its recruiting department, a spokesperson confirmed Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The company, which is part of Alphabet Inc.
\n GOOG,
\n +0.08%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n

GOOGL,
\n +0.07%<\/bg-quote>,<\/span>
\n continues \u201cto invest in top engineering and technical talent while also meaningfully slowing the pace of our overall hiring,\u201d the spokesperson said in an email to MarketWatch. \u201cIn line with this, the volume of requests for our recruiters has gone down.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

Google has \u201cmade the hard decision to reduce the size of our recruiting team\u201d as it maintains a focus on efficient operations, the spokesperson said. <\/p>\n

Semafor first reported on the company\u2019s intent to reduce its recruiting headcount and said that affected employees started to receive notifications Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The cuts are expected to impact a few hundred members of the company\u2019s recruiting team, while a significant majority of the team will stay at Google.<\/p>\n

The company said that the recruiting layoffs aren\u2019t indicative of plans for Google to make further cutbacks more broadly.<\/p>\n

Google, like other tech companies, engaged in more substantial layoffs earlier this year as investors pushed for the industry to get leaner and reduce pandemic-era bloat.<\/p>\n

Chief Executive Sundar Pichai said on Alphabet\u2019s last earnings call in July that the company was continuing \u201cto slow our expense growth and pace of hiring, and ensure our teams are aligned to our highest priorities.\u201d <\/p>\n

He noted that during the most recent quarter, the company \u201creallocated a number of teams,\u201d which included layoffs to Waze\u2019s ad sales team.<\/p>\n

While tech companies still seem to be taking a more measured approach to their headcount, there\u2019s one area of the market that appears to be seeing hot demand. Tech players including Netflix Inc.
\n NFLX,
\n -1.79%<\/bg-quote>
\n and Apple Inc.
\n AAPL,
\n +0.28%<\/bg-quote>
\n have posted lucrative jobs related to artificial intelligence. <\/p>\n
