That marked the index\u2019s first close below the technically important 200-day moving average since June 5, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The average had stood at 1,845.74 Wednesday, according to FactSet.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetMediaIllustration\n            inline\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetMediaIllustration\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<p>          <!-- eventually when we know what this card will be we can change it and leave this one --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"\n        media-object-image\n        enlarge-image\n        img-inline\n        article__inset__image\n      \" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><\/p>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<p>Through Tuesday, the index has spent 68 trading days above its 200-day moving average, its longest since a run of 226 trading days that ran from Sept. 25, 2020, to Aug. 18, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The 200-day average is a metric often viewed by traders and technical analysts as a signal of a market\u2019s long-term trend. <\/p>\n<p>The Russell 2000 has lagged well behind the large-cap S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX<br \/>\n       in September and for the year to date. The small-cap index is off 3.1% so far this month and has gained 4.5% in the year to date. The S&amp;P 500 is down 0.9% so far in September, but has rallied 16.4% in 2023. The Russell 2000 has dropped 8.1% from its 2023 closing high of 2,003.18 hit on July 31.<\/p>\n<p> Gains for the large-cap indexes have been driven primarily by the artificial-intelligence spawned rally in megacap tech stocks. Investors looking for the rally to broaden out have been optimistic small-cap stocks, which tend to be more oriented to the economic cycle, would benefit as fears of a recession or so-called hard landing as a result of the Federal Reserve\u2019s aggressive monetary tightening campaign gave way to resilient data.<\/p>\n<p>The weakness has come \u201cdespite all the talk this year about better-than-expected economic data and the possibility of a soft landing,\u201d said Sameer Samana, senior global market strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, in a note earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>Underperformance has accelerated, perhaps due in part to the regional banking woes in the spring, which further tightened credit and financial conditions for small businesses and is likely to spawn new regulations for small and midsize banks, the strategist said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we expect small-caps to eventually have their day in the sun (probably during the next economic upturn), we believe it is much too soon to add exposure to these companies,\u201d Samana wrote. \u201cThe fall historically has tended to be a seasonally<br \/>weak period for equities, and lingering inflation threatens to push the Fed to raise rates to higher levels and keep them longer, which increases the risk of a policy mistake and adds to the uncertainty that markets face.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/small-cap-stock-weakness-sees-russell-2000-flirt-with-200-day-moving-average-9cc20b6a?mod=markets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A continued bout of small-cap underperformance in the face of renewed \u201chigher-for-longer\u201d interest rate expectations saw the benchmark Russell 2000 stock-market index finish below an important support level on Wednesday.
