After all, September just started.<\/p>\n<p>And remember last year when people were procrastinating and finding\u00a0last-minute holiday travel deals? Well, the surge in air travel this year has changed all that.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p>The most recent data from Google Flights shows the lowest average price for flights starting in mid-December (around Christmas) are usually available around 71 days before departure. That\u2019s a whopping six weeks earlier than Google\u2019s<br \/>\n        GOOGL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202490156\/lastsale\" class=\"negative\">-0.37%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       findings last year when holiday prices were lowest about 22 days before departure.<\/p>\n<p>So now, the best time to book your end-of-December flights is by mid-October. And if you apply the same thinking to Thanksgiving flights, you\u2019ve got just a few weeks until you should book.<\/p>\n<p>Thanksgiving flights will probably be cheapest around mid-September. Wait too long, and you might pay more, get stuck with an inconvenient layover or be forced to book\u00a0basic economy\u00a0(read: middle seat).<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips to save on holiday travel this year, whether you\u2019re in the booking window or not.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Start tracking prices<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>No matter what you\u2019ve heard, there are no hacks for getting cheap flights by\u00a0booking on a Tuesday\u00a0or late at night. Flight prices are at the mercy of travel demand, and the holidays are always a busy time to fly.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, you don\u2019t have to spend hours checking the demand.<\/p>\n<p>Turn on\u00a0price tracking\u00a0on your preferred booking platform to get automatic email notifications when a flight you want goes down in cost. Search engines and online travel agencies have insights into the average costs for your specific route and nudge you when it\u2019s the best time to book.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related<\/strong>: How to have fun traveling solo\u2014and save money, too<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Book early for European travel<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Don\u2019t wait to book if you\u2019re interested in going across the pond for the holidays.\u00a0Europe travel\u00a0is back to 2019 pre-pandemic levels, with almost 20 million people departing for the continent from January to July 2023, according to data from the International Trade Administration.<\/p>\n<p>Data from Google Flights suggests the cheapest average prices for trans-Atlantic flights to Europe are 72 days or more before departure. In the 10 weeks before departure, airfares tend to increase.<\/p>\n<p>One option to save money is to consider booking on an\u00a0international budget airline, which can offer significant savings over legacy carriers, even when you factor in extra fees for baggage and meals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:<\/strong> 3 ways to cut costs on a trip to Europe<\/p>\n<p>You might also consider traveling internationally during Thanksgiving instead of Christmas or New Year\u2019s. Consider extending your trip so you don\u2019t have to fly on the\u00a0busiest days around Thanksgiving\u00a0(usually the Sunday after Thanksgiving) or\u00a0Christmas.
