The S&amp;P 500 rose 48.46 points, or 1.1%, to finish at 4,436.01, logging its best day in nearly two months. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h2>What\u2019s driving markets<\/h2>\n<p>Well-received earnings from AI chipmaker Nvidia<br \/>\n        NVDA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200467500\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+3.64%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       were the biggest story in markets on Thursday, even as an early jolt higher faded while the broader market slid into the red. <\/p>\n<p>The chipmaking giant, which has been perhaps the biggest beneficiary of this year\u2019s AI boom, reported a 141% surge in data-center sales and record earnings, while also serving up third-quarter revenue guidance of $15.68 billion to $16.32 billion, which surpassed Wall Street\u2019s expectations. <\/p>\n<p>Ivana Delevska, founder and CIO of Spear Invest, said Nvidia\u2019s success would likely help boost the broader technology sector over time. However, even as the company surpassed Wall Street\u2019s lofty expectations, the company faced an even higher bar among investors. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think Nvidia could have reported anything stronger than this, but it\u2019s still not impressing the market,\u201d Delevska said.<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia\u2019s numbers failed to offset other macro factors that have bedeviled markets over the past few weeks, she added: \u201cWith the 10-year yield above 4%, people are looking for something to break,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<p>Shares of Palantir Technologies<br \/>\n        PLTR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/221054928\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-6.34%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Advanced Micro Devices<br \/>\n        AMD,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208144392\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-5.84%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and OpenAI investor Microsoft<br \/>\n        MSFT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207732364\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.24%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       erased premarket gains and turned lower, with Palantir and AMD down by more than 5% in recent trade around 11 a.m. Eastern Time. <\/p>\n<p>Other members of the so-called \u201cMagnificent Seven\u201d group of megacap stocks also slid into the red, including Amazon.com Inc.<br \/>\n        AMZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210331248\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.74%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Tesla Inc.<br \/>\n        TSLA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203558040\/lastsale\" class=\"negative\">-1.15%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Apple Inc.<br \/>\n        AAPL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202934861\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.58%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       as well as Google parent Alphabet Inc.<br \/>\n        GOOGL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202490156\/lastsale\" class=\"negative\">-0.64%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n<p>        GOOG,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205453964\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.72%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       another major AI player with its Bard chatbot. Both Alphabet\u2019s Class A and Class C shares traded in the red. <\/p>\n<p>Treasury yields edged higher Thursday, paring some of Wednesday\u2019s drop that had sent them to their lowest levels in a week. <\/p>\n<p>The yield on the 10-year note<br \/>\n        BX:TMUBMUSD10Y<br \/>\n       rose 3 basis points to 4.214%. The ICE U.S. Dollar Index<br \/>\n        DXY<span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       a gauge of the greenback\u2019s value against major currencies, rose by 0.3% to 103.69. <\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, traders awaited a speech from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Friday at the Kansas City Fed\u2019s Jackson Hole Economic Symposium. Data showed the number of Americans who applied for unemployment benefits last week fell by 10,000 to a three-week low of 230,000, offering further evidence that the labor market remains rock solid.<\/p>\n<p>Data on durable-goods orders for long-lasting goods rose in July for the third month in row if recent ups and downs at Boeing are set aside. Orders increased 0.5% in July if transportation, autos and planes, are excluded.<\/p>\n<h2>Companies in focus<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n       <strong>Nvidia Corp.<\/strong>\u2018s shares<br \/>\n        NVDA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200467500\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+3.64%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       rose after the graphics-chip maker late Wednesday reported a 141% surge in data-center sales and record results.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n       <strong>Boeing <\/strong>stock<br \/>\n        BA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208579720\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-3.62%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       fell along with shares of <strong>Spirit AeroSystems<\/strong><br \/>\n        SPR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205043289\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-13.78%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       after disclosing an issue with fastener holes on Boeing 737 Max aircraft. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n       <strong>U.S. Steel<\/strong> stock<br \/>\n        X,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200069642\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.59%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       traded lower, extending a decline from Wednesday after Esmark withdrew its offer for the company that is being pursued by Cleveland-Cliffs<br \/>\n        CLF,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205424168\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.59%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Snowflake Inc. <\/strong><br \/>\n        SNOW,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/220991541\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-3.24%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares slipped after reporting quarterly earnings Wednesday.
