After rising 229% so far in 2023, is it too late for investors to profit from buying Nvidia stock?<\/p>\n<p>I see two reasons the company\u2019s stock could hit $1,000:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nvidia targets a large, fast-growing industry<\/li>\n<li>Nvidia\u2019s competitive advantages suggest it will continue to be the market leader<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Nvidia\u2019s Great Q2 Financial Report<\/h2>\n<p>Nvidia designs semiconductors for gaming, data centers, and automotive vehicles industries \u2014 while outsourcing their manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>Revenue soared in its fiscal 2024 second quarter, which ended in July. Nvidia stock is soaring on its forecast for explosive Q3 revenue growth driven by demand for AI chips.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Q2 Revenue: up 88% to $13.51 billion<\/strong> \u2014 about $3.3 billion ahead of the consensus forecast of $11.22 billion, according to Refinitiv.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Q2 adjusted earnings per share: $2.70<\/strong> \u2014 61 cents more than expected according to Refinitiv.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Q3 revenue forecast: $16 billion<\/strong> \u2014 $3.4 billion above estimates, according to CNBC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><fbs-ad position=\"inread\" progressive=\"\" ad-id=\"article-0-inread\" aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\"><\/fbs-ad><\/p>\n<p>Most of Nvidia\u2019s revenue growth came from selling chips to data centers. Here is the breakout by division, according to CNBC:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Data center revenue: $10.3 billion<\/strong> \u2014 $2.27 billion more than forecast.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gaming revenue: $2.49 billion<\/strong> \u2014 $110 million above estimates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nvidia is pleased with the results. CEO Jensen Huang said in the press release. \u201cA new computing era has begun,. Companies worldwide are transitioning from general-purpose to accelerated computing and generative AI.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Nvidia\u2019s Large Addressable Market<\/h2>\n<p>The company has ample room to grow given a total addressable market Nvidia estimated in February 2023 at $1 trillion. The opportunity breaks down by industry as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Automotive:<\/strong> $300 billion<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chips and Systems:<\/strong> $300 billion<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nvidia AI Enterprise Software:<\/strong> $150 billion<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nvidia AI Omniverse Software:<\/strong> $150 billion<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gaming:<\/strong> $100 billion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Investors are most excited about Nvidia\u2019s AI business, which the company reports within the data center line item. Data center revenue increased 41% in 2022 \u2014 surpassing revenue in gaming \u2014 the industry where Nvidia began competing in 1993, according to CNBC.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Nvidia\u2019s Market Dominance And Competitive Advantages<\/h2>\n<p>Nvidia dominates the AI chip market \u2014 with 80% or more market share, according to CNBC \u2014 and has been building competitive advantages for 15 years to sustain its leadership position.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subhead3-embed color-body bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Nvidia\u2019s Differentiation Strategy<\/h3>\n<p>If a company wants to lead its industry, it must choose one of two strategies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Differentiation<\/strong> \u2014 where the company delivers more value to customers than competing products and charges a price premium; and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Low-Cost Producer<\/strong> \u2014 where a competitor sets its price well-below the industry average and reaps scale economies enabling it to reduce its costs below its price.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nvidia is a differentiator. After all, customers are willing to pay a significant price premium and to wait for over a year to obtain its chips. According to the <em data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/21\/technology\/nvidia-ai-chips-gpu.html\">New York Times<\/em><fbs-ticker data-name=\"NYT\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/companies\/new-york-times\" data-type=\"stock\"><br \/>\n  NYT<br \/>\n <\/fbs-ticker>, Futurum Group analyst Daniel Newman said, \u201cCustomers will wait 18 months to buy an Nvidia system rather than buy an available, off-the-shelf chip from either a start-up or another competitor. It\u2019s incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia chips are expensive; however, the company argues they enable companies to save time training their Large Language Models \u2014 which more than offsets the price premium.<\/p>\n<p>The price for each Nvidia H100 ranges from $15,000 to more than $40,000. AWS Vice President David Brown said Amazon\u2019s AI chips are a bargain compared to Nvidia\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang disagrees. \u201cIf you can reduce the time of training to half on a $5 billion data center, the savings is more than the cost of all of the chips.\u201d he said in the Times report. \u201cWe are the lowest-cost solution in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subhead3-embed color-body bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Nvidia\u2019s Competitive Advantages<\/h3>\n<p>Nvidia\u2019s competitive advantages flow from its ability to adapt to new opportunities faster than rivals and a page it took from Apple<fbs-ticker data-name=\"AAPL\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/companies\/apple\" data-type=\"stock\"><br \/>\n  AAPL<br \/>\n <\/fbs-ticker> \u2014 create a community of programmers who happily build software to run on your hardware.<\/p>\n<p>Naveen Rao is an entrepreneur who sold his startup that built GPU chips for gaming and AI to Intel. Rao saw Nvidia adapting GPUs for AI far more rapidly than did Intel. He left Intel and started a software company, MosaicML where he compared Nvidia chips to its rivals. Rao told the Times, \u201cEverybody builds on Nvidia first. If you come out with a new piece of hardware, you\u2019re racing to catch up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia\u2019s competitive advantages make it difficult for rivals to gain market share. The Times reported these competitive advantages include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Launching CUDA.<\/strong> In 2006, Nvidia announced CUDA \u2014 software for programming GPUs for other fields such as physics or chemical simulation. In 2012, researchers used the chips to identify a cat with precision.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hiring an AI team. <\/strong>Nvidia hired a team to train LLMs \u2014 gaining early insights into what AI practitioners wanted. Using that market intelligence, Nvidia built libraries \u2014 to perform tasks common to AI development \u2014 thus saving the developers\u2019 time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Building faster chips every few years and expanding to complete computers. <\/strong>Nvidia consistently delivered faster chips every few years. In 2017, it began tailoring GPUs to handle specific AI calculations, sold chips or circuit boards for other companies, and provided complete computers aimed at faster AI processing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Launching H100 chips.<\/strong> In September 2022, Nvidia announced production of H100 chips to enhance transformer operations \u2014 which are essential for training ChatGPT and other Generative AI chatbots.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Forming partnerships with Big Tech companies and investing in startups. <\/strong>Nvidia collaborates with large technology companies such as ServiceNow<fbs-ticker data-name=\"NOW\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/companies\/servicenow\" data-type=\"stock\"><br \/>\n   NOW<br \/>\n  <\/fbs-ticker> and Snowflake and funds startups. Nvidia invested in a $1.3 billion June 2023 financing for Inflection AI, which used to money to help finance 22,000 H100 chips.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These competitive advantages are difficult for rivals to copy. Moor Insights semiconductor analyst Patrick Moorhead told CNBC, \u201cNvidia has a double moat right now in that they have the highest performance training hardware. Then on the input side of the software, in AI, there are libraries and CUDA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia\u2019s competitive advantages suggest significant growth potential. CoreWeave, a cloud provider that sells access to Nvidia GPUs, generated $30 million in 2022 revenue and has contracted for $2 billion in business in 2024, the Times reported. This represents a 716% compound annual growth rate.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Where Does Nvidia Stock Go From Here?<\/h2>\n<p>Heavy options trading ahead of Nvidia\u2019s announcement suggested many are afraid to miss out on the upside. In a Wall Street Journal report, Matthew Tym, head of equity derivatives trading at Cantor Fitzgerald said, \u201cThis name in particular is full of FOMO, and people do not want to miss out on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Analysts expect Nvidia stock to rise. FactSet noted the 50 investment analysts covering the stock set an average price target around $537, or 18% above Tuesday\u2019s close of $456.68.
