A South Korean man has been handed a suspended jail term of almost three years after he was found guilty of armed robbery \u201cto clear a crypto debt.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the South Korean media outlet WowTV, the unnamed criminal was 22 years old and had amassed debts of over $37,000 due to \u201cfailed cryptoasset investments.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man, described as a college student, was sentenced at a branch of the Gwangju District Court, where he was found guilty of robbery, threats of violence, and theft.<\/p>\n

The court heard that the man entered a convenience store in the Dong-gu region of Gwangju on June 11 this year, \u201carmed with a weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The court also heard that the man then proceeded to threaten a store employee with the weapon.<\/p>\n

The man then went on to steal over $425 in cash.<\/p>\n

And he stole a number of items from the store before leaving, including Google Play gift cards.<\/p>\n

He then went to a number of other stores in the city, where he stole similar items.<\/p>\n

The presiding judge Koh Sang-young sentenced the man to two years and six months in prison, as well as three years of probation, and 200 hours of community service.<\/p>\n

But Judge Koh decided to suspend the jail sentence after ruling that the man had acted out of \u201cdesperation\u201d \u2013 and that he had even contemplated taking his own life.<\/p>\n

The man was also described as a \u201cfirst-time offender,\u201d News1 reported.<\/p>\n

Crypto and \u2018Extreme Choices\u2019 Drove S Korean Man to Armed Robbery<\/h2>\n

Judge Koh said that the man had \u201ccommitted the case with extreme choices in mind\u201d due to the \u201cpile\u201d of debt he had amassed.<\/p>\n

And the court added that the man\u2019s family had \u201cpledged\u201d to \u201cactively\u201d help with the man\u2019s rehabilitation \u2013 a factor that led the judge to suspend the jail term.<\/p>\n

But the judge added that the crime was \u201cnot light in nature\u201d and that the store clerk \u201chad felt fear for [their] life.\u201d<\/p>\n

South Korea was rocked by a number of apparent crypto-related suicides in 2021, with investors seemingly taking their lives after losing enormous sums of money on the crypto market.<\/p>\n

And the nation was stunned last year by the case of a married couple and their 10-year-old child who were found dead after driving their car into the sea.<\/p>\n

The couple had amassed enormous crypto investment-related debts.<\/p>\n

Investigators found the couple had made numerous Bitcoin (BTC) purchases shortly before their bodies were recovered off the coast of Wando, South Jeolla Province, in the Southwest of South Korea.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
