{"id":50174,"date":"2023-08-18T15:36:05","date_gmt":"2023-08-18T19:36:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/markets\/u-s-stocks-trade-mixed-as-sp-500-stumbles-to-third-straight-weekly-loss-on-rising-yields-china-worries\/"},"modified":"2023-08-18T15:36:07","modified_gmt":"2023-08-18T19:36:07","slug":"u-s-stocks-trade-mixed-as-sp-500-stumbles-to-third-straight-weekly-loss-on-rising-yields-china-worries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=50174","title":{"rendered":"U.S. stocks trade mixed, as S&#038;P 500 stumbles to third straight weekly loss on rising yields, China worries"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-article__body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0002414532\" role=\"document\">\n<p>U.S. stocks were trading mixed Friday afternoon, with the S&amp;P 500 about flat, as the recent rise in bond yields and China\u2019s economic woes left stocks heading for another losing week. <\/p>\n<h2>How stock indexes are trading<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      The Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA<br \/>\n       was up almost 25 points, or 0.1%, at 34,499.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX<br \/>\n       was flat at around 4,370.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The Nasdaq Composite<br \/>\n        COMP<br \/>\n       shed almost 15 points, or 0.1%, to 13,302.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For the week, the Dow was heading for a 2.2% decline while the S&amp;P 500 was on pace to slide 2.1% and the Nasdaq was on track to drop 2.5%, according to FactSet data, at last check. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h2>What\u2019s driving markets<\/h2>\n<p>U.S. stocks were mostly down Friday afternoon after a recent rise in Treasury yields to the highest levels since the 2008 financial crisis .<\/p>\n<p>The big story in markets this week has been the deteriorating value of longer-duration government bonds, with the 10-year yield<br \/>\n        BX:TMUBMUSD10Y<br \/>\n       near its highest level since 2008, and the 30-year yield<br \/>\n        BX:TMUBMUSD30Y<br \/>\n       at its highest level in more than a decade. Treasury yields were slightly lower on Friday, but equities remained under pressure.<\/p>\n<p>The recent jump in yields is \u201croiling the market,\u201d said Scott Wren, senior global market strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, in a phone interview Friday. This week\u2019s decline in stocks is \u201cmainly tied to higher yields and the potential for the Fed to do more\u201d tightening of its monetary policy to bring down inflation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor us, there\u2019s more downside here\u201d in stocks after a large rally earlier this year said Wren, pointing to Wells Fargo Investment Institute\u2019s expectation for the S&amp;P 500 index to end 2023 at 4,100. That\u2019s around 6% lower than the index\u2019s current trading level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few months ago if we were to predict a pullback in the equity market we\u2019d say the catalyst was recession,\u201d said David Donabedian, chief investment officer of CIBC Private Wealth US. \u201cInstead, the August pullback is driven by equity investors concern over the bond market and China. Bond yields have surged higher, making investors nervous.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestors are concerned that if bond yields continue going higher, the economy is too strong and the Fed will need to raise interest rates further. And with the bond yield high enough, that poses competition for equity investors who feel the bond market is less risky than the stock market right now,\u201d he said, in emailed comments, while noting that even with the current pullback, the market is still up for the year.<\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 has risen almost 14% so far in 2023,  FactSet data show, at last check. <\/p>\n<p>Most of the recent unwind in the stock market has been tied to tech-related companies that had gotten a lift from the exuberance surrounding artificial intelligence, said Dave Grecsek, managing director in investment strategy and research at Aspiriant, in a phone interview Friday. That reset is \u201chealthy,\u201d as it has removed some of the froth from the U.S. stock market, he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Need to Know:<\/strong> Bond yields hold the key to an emotional market that can change on a dime, says this strategist<\/p>\n<p>Market attention also is focused on China, after builder Evergrande filed for bankruptcy protection in U.S. courts, and the People\u2019s Bank of China stepped in to help its beleaguered currency. <\/p>\n<p>Worries about the solvency of Evergrande\u2019s sector peer Country Garden \u201chaven\u2019t helped either, along with worries over contagion to the shadow banking system, after Chinese asset manager Zhonghzi missed a coupon payment, has added to the uncertainty,\u201d said Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK, in a note.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See: <\/strong>Global investors expect China to deliver a massive fiscal stimulus. Here\u2019s why it may never arrive.<\/p>\n<p>The monthly U.S. expiration of stock options contracts may add volatility, particularly were the S&amp;P 500 to decline to the 4,320 level, according to Nomura strategist Charlie McElligott. <\/p>\n<p>There was no U.S. economic data released on Friday, ahead of next week\u2019s gathering of Federal Reserve officials in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. <\/p>\n<h2>Companies in focus<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      <strong>Deere\u00a0&amp; Co.<\/strong>\u00a0<br \/>\n        DE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207941296\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-5.57%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       stock fell around 5% despite the farm equipment maker\u2019s third-quarter profit and its 2023 guidance beating analyst estimates. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Applied Materials Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        AMAT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209393259\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+3.94%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares rose 3.5% after the chip industry equipment supplier reported earnings and forecast an outlook that topped Wall Street expectations. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Shares of <strong>Est\u00e9e Lauder Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        EL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200740220\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-3.69%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       fell 2.5%, after the cosmetics company posted better-than-expected earnings for its fiscal fourth quarter but offered guidance that lagged consensus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n       U.S.-listed China ADRs were under pressure as the People\u2019s Bank of China boosted its yuan defense and property developer China Evergrande Group filed for bankruptcy protection in New York late Thursday.
