The pope said the conversation about AI requires that \u201cethical reflection\u201d be extended to the fields of education and law.<\/p>\n<p>He said there is a need to be \u201cvigilant and to work so that a logic of violence and discrimination does not take root in the production and use of such devices, at the expense of the most fragile and excluded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AI can solve problems, produce creative writing and perhaps even be\u00a0employed by financial advisers to pick stocks, but it can also produce inaccurate answers that may reflect biases and prejudices that exist in society.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span>\u2018Injustice and inequalities fuel conflicts and antagonisms.\u2019<span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span>\n      <\/p>\n<p>        <small><br \/>\n          <span class=\"inset-author article__inset__pullquote__author\">\u2014 Pope Francis on AI<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When used in hiring, the technology could open companies up to allegations of discrimination, critics say, and it could replace not only low-income jobs, but also jobs that previously required greater levels of human creativity and oversight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInjustice and inequalities fuel conflicts and antagonisms,\u201d the pope said in his statement. He said there was an urgent need to use AI \u201cin a responsible way\u201d so that it can serve humanity and protect the common good.<\/p>\n<p>The Writers Guild of American and the Screen Actors Guild are currently on a monthslong strike, looking for more pay, better working conditions and stricter rules around things like the use of actors\u2019 images in the age of AI.<\/p>\n<p>There has been an explosion in the use of AI since the launch last December of ChatGPT, a chatbot created by OpenAI, which is partially backed by Microsoft Corp.<br \/>\n        MSFT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207732364\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.48%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span>\n       <\/p>\n<p>The chatbot has been the subject of several class-action lawsuits related to copyright infringement.
