Belarus is set to follow suit with Russia\u2019s CBDC development plans \u2013 and plans to launch a digital version of the Belarusian ruble for use in \u201ccross-border\u201d payments.<\/p>\n

Per Minsk-Novosti and Interfax, the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus (NBRB) has earmarked the launch of CBDC as one of its most \u201csignificant\u201d projects of recent years.<\/p>\n

Dmitry Kalechits, the NRBR\u2019s Board\u2019s Deputy Chairman, said:<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of our most significant large-scale projects will be the introduction of the digital Belarusian ruble and its use at the cross-border level.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Moscow expressed similar sentiments last month, with top politicians suggesting Russia\u2019s digital ruble \u201ccould be compatible\u201d with China\u2019s digital yuan and other global CBDCs.<\/p>\n

Kalechits explained that the bank already had a \u201cdefinition\u201d for the CBDC, which it already considers \u201ca legal tender that performs all the functions of money.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the coin would be \u201cissued by the central bank\u201d and would \u201chave the same value as cash\u201d versions of the Belarusian ruble.<\/p>\n

Kalechits\u2019 comments come months after Pavel Kallaur, the bank\u2019s Governor, spoke of the NRBR\u2019s plans to create a CBDC \u201cexperiment\u201d with \u201ca narrow group of participants.\u201d<\/p>\n

Per BELTA, Kallaur said that both commercial \u201cbanks and individuals\u201d would take part in the pilot.<\/p>\n

But the Governor appeared to hedge his bets at the time, claiming that the NRBR needed to \u201cdecide on the feasibility\u201d of a digital Belarusian ruble.<\/p>\n

Kallaur said that Presidential approval was still required, noting at the time that a final \u201cdecision will be made at the level of the head of state.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Russia\u2019s keenness to forge ahead with its own digital ruble project appears to have encouraged Minsk to speed up its own CBDC project.<\/p>\n

Kalechits explained that settlements with the digital ruble would be legally classified as non-cash payments.<\/p>\n

This wording echoes the terms of Moscow\u2019s own CBCD law.<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s CBDC trial is now underway, with over a dozen commercial banks now piloting digital RUB transactions with selected groups of customers.<\/p>\n

Unlike Moscow, which has flirted with a China-style crypto ban, Belarus has been attempting to woo crypto firms.<\/p>\n

In a bid to encourage regional crypto players to set up shop in the country, the capital Minsk has created the Hi-Tech Park, with overseas crypto companies offered visa waivers and tax-free status until at least 2025.<\/p>\n

The media outlets reported that \u201cat the end of May,\u201d the Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko spoke about a CBDC launch with Elvira Nabiullina, the crypto-skeptic Governor of the Russian Central Bank.<\/p>\n

Shortly after, Lukashenko and the NRBR pledged to make an \u201cappropriate decision\u201d on a CBDC launch \u201cby the end of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it appears that the bank has already edged closer to a rollout since May as it looks to align its CBDC plans with those now being formulated in Moscow.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
