To be fair, AMD stock is up 77% in 2023 \u2014 some 26% below its October 2021 all-time high.<\/p>\n<p>Will AMD\u2019s generative AI strategy give it the growth it needs to keep its stock climbing and tap into the growth Nvidia is enjoying? Analysts are mixed and I would wait to see whether AMD can execute.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">AMD Beats While PC Market Remains Weak<\/h2>\n<p>Santa Clara, Calif.-based AMD operates in four segments of the semiconductor industry with very different growth trajectories. For example,<\/p>\n<p><fbs-ad position=\"inread\" progressive=\"\" ad-id=\"article-0-inread\" aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\"><\/fbs-ad><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Data Center<\/strong> segment makes chips for data centers \u2014 includes server central processing units and graphics processing units among others.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Client<\/strong> segment makes chipsets for desktop and notebook PCs<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Gaming<\/strong> segment makes discrete GPUs and other chips. Nvidia famously repurposed Gaming CPUs for cryptocurrency mining and Generative AI applications.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Embedded<\/strong> segment primarily makes embedded CPUs and GPUs, among others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>AMD has been getting smaller for the last two quarters. As <em data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.investors.com\/news\/technology\/amd-stock-rises-on-second-quarter-beat\/\">Investor\u2019s Business Daily<\/em><em> <\/em>reported, AMD suffered \u201cfour consecutive quarters of declining earnings. Sales have dropped for two straight quarters as it navigates a downturn in demand for personal computers and traditional servers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On August 1, AMD reported expectations-beating results \u2014 featuring a plunge in revenue from the previous year and weaker-than-expected guidance for the third quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the key numbers, according to <em data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/08\/01\/amd-earnings-report-q2-2023.html\">CNBC<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Q2 Revenue: $5.36 billion<\/strong>, down 18% from the year before \u2014 though $50 million above expectations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Q2 Adjusted earnings per share: 58 cents<\/strong> \u2014 a penny higher than expectations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Q3 revenue guidance: $5.7 billion<\/strong>, up 2.5% from the year before \u2014 yet $110 million below analysts\u2019 forecast.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>AMD expects its data center and embedded divisions to grow. AMD CEO Lisa Su said on a call with analysts, \u201cWe are expecting a large ramp in the second half for our Data Center business, weighted towards the fourth quarter and we are still looking at a ZIP code \u2014 let\u2019s call it 50%, plus or minus, second half to first half.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AMD sees the most growth potential in its client segments. According to AMD\u2019s Second Quarter 2023 Earnings Call Transcript, CFO<fbs-ticker data-name=\"CFO\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/investment-funds\/cfo\/\" data-type=\"etf\"><br \/>\n  CFO<br \/>\n <\/fbs-ticker> Jean Hu said, \u201cYear over year, we expect revenue for the client segment to be up, data center segment to be flattish, and the gaming and embedded segments to decline. Sequentially, we expect the client and the data center segment to each grow by a double-digit percentage and the gaming and embedded segments to decline.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">AMD Lags Nvidia In Generative AI<\/h2>\n<p>AMD is one of the few companies making high-end GPUs needed for artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>With Generative AI expected grow at a 31% compound average annual rate to $152 billion in 2032, AMD could grow quickly if it could grab a larger share of that market.<\/p>\n<p>To do that, a company must be able to build, ship, and service the product. While AMD is investing more to do that well, it lags Nvidia which in May said it is prepared to supply those AI chips.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subhead3-embed color-body bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Nvidia Leading In Generative AI GPUs<\/h3>\n<p>As Nvidia CFO Colette Kress told investors on the earnings call, \u201cThis demand has extended our data center visibility out a few quarters and we have procured substantially higher supply for the second half of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia sees AI as the biggest thing since Apple<fbs-ticker data-name=\"AAPL\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/companies\/apple\" data-type=\"stock\"><br \/>\n  AAPL<br \/>\n <\/fbs-ticker> introduced the iPhone in 2007. CEO Jensen Huang told the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, \u201cAll the technology came together and helped everybody realize what an amazing product that can be and what capabilities it can have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, operators of big data centers are retooling their computing infrastructure to capture AI\u2019s growth opportunities. \u201cA trillion dollars of installed global data center infrastructure will transition from general purpose to accelerated computing as companies race to apply generative AI into every product, service and business process,\u201d Huang told the<em> Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subhead3-embed color-body bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">AMD Aiming To Gain Generative AI GPU Market Share<\/h3>\n<p>AMD sees opportunity in Generative AI. As Su told investors August 1, &#8220;Our AI engagements increased by more than seven times in the quarter as multiple customers initiated or expanded programs supporting future deployments of Instinct accelerators at scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile AMD is spending more on AI-related research and development aiming to offer customers AI-specific chips and software development. Su said, \u201cOur goal is to make this a significant growth driver for AMD. Going forward, we see AI as a significant PC demand driver as Microsoft<fbs-ticker data-name=\"MSFT\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/companies\/microsoft\" data-type=\"stock\"><br \/>\n  MSFT<br \/>\n <\/fbs-ticker> and other large software providers incorporate generative AI into their offerings.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Can AMD Catch Up With Nvidia In Generative AI?<\/h2>\n<p>AMD expects to launch chips aimed at competing with Nvidia in the fourth quarter of 2023. According to <em data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/amd-forecasts-third-quarter-revenue-below-estimates-2023-08-01\/\">Reuters<\/em>, AMD will \u201cramp up production of its flagship MI300 artificial-intelligence chips in the fourth quarter,\u201d to compete with Nvidia\u2019s H100 chips.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AMD is seeing strong demand for its MI300 series chips. Reuters noted Su saw \u201cvery high demand\u201d including from \u201ctop-tier cloud providers, large enterprises and numerous leading AI companies.\u201d during the third quarter.<\/p>\n<p>The market for AI chips in China is considerable, Sadly for AMD investors, its MI300s cannot be sold in China because they \u201cexceed the performance limits for sale to China under export controls issued in October,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rivals \u2014 most notable Nvidia and Intel \u2014 have already created special chips to comply with those performance limits, <em>Reuters<\/em> reported. Su told investors August 1, \u201cOur plan is to, of course, be fully compliant with U.S. export controls.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Where Is AMD Stock Heading?<\/h2>\n<p>Analysts have mixed views on where AMD stock goes from here.<\/p>\n<p>Jenny Hardy, portfolio manager at GP Bullhound, which owns Nvidia and AMD stock is bullish. As she said, Nvidia still faces supply constraints, leaving an opening for AMD&#8217;s chip. &#8220;If AMD can ramp production and launch those MI300 chips in the fourth quarter, they will likely see strong demand because plenty of people cannot get their hands on Nvidia chips. So we would assume that AMD can effectively kind of fill some of that supply-demand gap,\u201d noted <em>Reuters<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Morningstar<\/em> sees the potential for AMD to compete with Nvidia in Generative AI \u2014 maintaining its $130 price target after AMD\u2019s second quarter earnings report.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Director Brian Colello, wrote \u201cWe\u2019re most encouraged by the firm\u2019s disclosure that its artificial intelligence customer engagements \u2018grew by more than seven times sequentially,\u2019 as the firm is poised for a strong ramp of AI graphics processing units starting in late 2023 and into 2024.
