(Bloomberg) — The selloff in Icahn Enterprises LP triggered by a short report deepened on Wednesday, sending the stock to its lowest since December 2010.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Shares sank as much as 21% intraday, adding to a 20% plunge in the prior session after a Hindenburg Research report sent the stock spiraling in its worst one-day drop on record. Carl Icahn, who is chairman of the board at the holding company, saw billions erased from his fortune by the rout, as Hindenburg took aim at one of Wall Street\u2019s most famous activist investors.<\/p>\n

The Tuesday rebuttal from its billionaire chairman did little to stem the selloff.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe self-serving short seller report published by Hindenburg Research today was intended solely to generate profits on Hindenburg\u2019s short position at the expense of IEP\u2019s long-term unitholders,\u201d Icahn said in a statement. \u201cWe stand by our public disclosures and we believe that IEP\u2019s performance will speak for itself over the long term as it always has.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hindenburg, founded by Nathan Anderson, has risen to prominence targeting corporate giants like payments firm Block Inc. and billionaire Gautam Adani\u2019s business empire. In the report, Hindenburg said that Icahn \u201chas made a classic mistake of taking on too much leverage in the face of sustained losses: a combination that rarely ends well.\u201d<\/p>\n
