{"id":42654,"date":"2023-07-31T13:36:42","date_gmt":"2023-07-31T17:36:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/markets\/u-s-stocks-struggle-for-direction-as-wall-street-eyes-5-month-winning-streak\/"},"modified":"2023-07-31T13:36:43","modified_gmt":"2023-07-31T17:36:43","slug":"u-s-stocks-struggle-for-direction-as-wall-street-eyes-5-month-winning-streak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=42654","title":{"rendered":"U.S. stocks struggle for direction as Wall Street eyes 5-month winning streak"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-article__body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0002342628\" role=\"document\">\n<p>U.S. stocks struggled for direction Monday, holding levels that would secure a fifth consecutive month of gains for the S&amp;P 500 amid optimism over corporate earnings and a resilient economy.<\/p>\n<p>Investors were also awaiting the Monday afternoon release of a closely watched quarterly Federal Reserve survey of lenders for clues to the outlook for financial conditions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h2>What\u2019s happening<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      The Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598065\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.10%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       was up 12 points, or less than 0.1%, at 35,472.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210599714\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-0.01%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       edged down 2 points, or 0.1%, to 4,579.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The Nasdaq Composite<br \/>\n        COMP,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598365\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.04%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       was off 2 points, or less than 0.1%, at 14,314.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 was up 3% in July through Friday\u2019s close, on track for a fifth straight monthly gain, while the Dow saw a 3.1% July advance and the Nasdaq Composite gained 3.8%.<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s driving markets<\/h2>\n<p>A calm start to the week leaves U.S. stocks eyeing a fifth consecutive month of gains. <\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 is up 15.4% over that period, and has advanced 19.3% for the year to date, after further indications of cooling inflation bolstered hopes the U.S. economy can avoid a sharp contraction as the end of Federal Reserve monetary tightening approaches.<\/p>\n<p>Also supporting sentiment is a generally well-received second-quarter earnings season. With just over half of S&amp;P 500 companies having reported results, 80% of them delivered a positive earnings per share surprise and 64% a positive revenue<br \/>surprise, according to FactSet.<\/p>\n<p>This week brings another deluge of results, including earnings from<strong> Apple Inc. <\/strong><br \/>\n        AAPL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202934861\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.19%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and <strong>Amazon.com Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        AMZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210331248\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.90%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, rising Treasury yields, with the 10-year rate<br \/>\n        TMUBMUSD10Y,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.000%\" channel=\"\" class=\"\">3.930%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       last week edging above the 4% threshold, are making some investors wary. Lofty stock-market valuations can make safe Treasury securities more attractive to investors.<\/p>\n<p>The almost 20% year-to-date advance of the S&amp;P 500 reflects \u201ca lot of good news priced in\u201d following a two-month stretch in which the economic data was solid enough to provide a \u201cclear runway\u201d to the soft-landing thesis \u2014 allowing stocks to rise unimpeded, said Jason Draho, head of Americas asset allocation at UBS, in a phone interview. <\/p>\n<p>As a result, the S&amp;P 500 \u201cisn\u2019t particularly cheap on a valuation basis,\u201d he said. \u201cThe question is, \u2018how much higher can it go?\u2019 and investors could be reluctant to chase the performance.\u201d Now that the Federal Reserve has raised rates into a \u201cclearly restrictive level, the risk is that this will cause economic pain down the line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Fed\u2019s Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey, due at 2 p.m. Eastern, \u201cshould show loan growth is weakening and that the economy should steadily weaken,\u201d said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at Oanda, in a note.<\/p>\n<p>But traders may hold off on taking new positions until they see Friday\u2019s July jobs report, he said. \u201cThe key for the payroll report might be what is happening with wages, as it seems fears of an acceleration of inflation have been downsized,\u201d Moya wrote.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See: <\/strong>Stocks are on a seemingly unstoppable hot streak, but this bond-market \u2018tipping point\u2019 could see it end in a hurry<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Scott Chronert, equity strategist at Citibank, raised his S&amp;P 500 year-end target for 2023 and 2024 to 4,600 and 5,000 respectively. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe near-term hurdles we envisioned headed into Q3 are now behind. The new targets reflect increased probability of a soft landing in our scenario approach. Related, stronger earnings growth headed into \u201924 is an important call out. An index P\/E above our fair value range can be attributed to the mega cap growth cohort. The implication is that we look to buy pullbacks to position for an earnings growth acceleration call in \u201924,\u201d Chronert summarized in a note to clients.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See:<\/strong> Citigroup raises S&amp;P 500 target for 2023 on increased chances of \u2018soft landing\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee, in an interview with Yahoo Finance on Monday, said that it would be a \u201chistoric triumph\u201d for the central bank to achieve a so-called soft landing \u2014 referring to the rare feat of wrestling down inflation while averting recession.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on CBS News\u2019 \u201cFace the Nation,\u201d Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari on Sunday said the central bank\u2019s current assessment is that the U.S. will pull off a so-called soft landing and avoid a recession. But he noted that core inflation, currently around 4.1%, is still double the Fed\u2019s 2% target.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want to declare victory\u201d yet, he said according to a transcript, adding, \u201cIf we need to raise rates further from here, we will do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Chicago Business Barometer rose to 42.8 in July from 41.5 in June, falling short of the 43.3 reading expected by economists polled by The Wall Street Journal but marking the second consecutive month that the pace of contraction relaxed.<\/p>\n<h2>Companies in focus<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      <strong>Quest Diagnostics Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        DGX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201001842\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.29%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       said Monday it has brought the first blood-based biomarker test to assess the risk of developing Alzheimer\u2019s disease to market. Shares were off 0.3%.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Shares of <strong>SoFi Technologies Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        SOFI,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/222838146\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+19.90%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       rallied 17.9% after the financial-technology company raised its earnings outlook for the full year, while beating expectations for the latest period.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Shares of <strong>Ford Motor Co.<\/strong><br \/>\n        F,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208911460\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.32%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       were off 1.2% Monday, after Jefferies analyst Philippe Houchois cut his rating to hold, after upgrading it to buy on May 30, citing \u201cworse EV losses and strategic wobble.\u201d He trimmed his stock price target to $15 from $17.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        AMC,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200235402\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+6.90%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       enjoyed its \u201cbest week ever\u201d based on admissions revenue from July 21 through July 27, the company said Monday, setting a new company record for U.S. theaters and global theaters.
