\u201cThe decline in consecutive years might look small, but it\u2019s an indicator that larger issues may lie under the surface.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how Frank Hanley, senior director of auto benchmarking at J.D. Power, introduces the results of the research giant\u2019s latest study of how Americans are responding to automakers\u2019 latest vehicle designs and performance.<\/p>\n

\n

J.D. Power\u2019s U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) Study measures \u201cowners\u2019 emotional attachment and level of excitement with their new vehicle.\u201d Researchers poll new car owners on \u201c37 attributes, ranging from the sense of comfort they feel when climbing into the driver\u2019s seat to their exhilaration when they step on the accelerator.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time in the study\u2019s 28-year history, overall scores have declined two years in a row. Americans are growing less enamored of new cars.<\/p>\n

Overall satisfaction scored a middling B grade \u2013 845 on a 1,000-point scale.<\/p>\n

Plus:<\/strong> The deadliest\u2014and least deadly\u2014cars, trucks and SUVs<\/p>\n

Infotainment system complexity<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Complex entertainment and information technologies continue to frustrate buyers, the study finds. Less than half of owners prefer to use their car\u2019s own built-in technologies to navigate, use voice recognition, and make calls. Most preferred to use their phone in the car (are you listening, GM?
\n GM,
\n -2.36%<\/bg-quote>
\n ). Only 56% of owners use their car\u2019s own systems to play music \u2013 falling quickly from 70% in 2020.<\/p>\n

But, in a new development, buyers are growing less fond of how new cars look. Satisfaction with exterior design fell further than any other factor measured \u2014 888 from 894.<\/p>\n

No difference between best luxury, non-luxury scores<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The winners among luxury cars and mainstream cars tied. Among premium buyers, Jaguar owners were the most in love with their new cars. But new Dodge owners rated their cars just as well.<\/p>\n

Acura scored last among luxury brands. Chrysler took the last spot among mainstream cars. Perhaps more surprisingly, Toyota
\n TM,
\n +1.04%<\/bg-quote>
\n \u2013 the world\u2019s largest automaker \u2013 barely stayed out of last place.<\/p>\n

Genesis, Hyundai, Kia win more matchups<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Having a particularly large lineup gives an automaker more chances to succeed and to fail. Hyundai Motor Group (Genesis, Hyundai, and Kia
\n 000270,
\n -1.78%<\/bg-quote>
\n ) didn\u2019t place any of its brands in the top three of either list. But the company had more models ranking highest in their segments than any other. The\u00a0Genesis GV60,\u00a0Hyundai Santa Cruz,\u00a0Kia Carnival,\u00a0Kia EV6,\u00a0Kia Forte,\u00a0Kia K5,\u00a0Kia Rio,\u00a0Kia Stinger, and\u00a0Kia Telluride\u00a0all led their categories.<\/p>\n

No other manufacturer won in more than five.<\/p>\n
