{"id":40709,"date":"2023-07-26T10:23:41","date_gmt":"2023-07-26T14:23:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/markets\/u-s-stocks-struggle-for-direction-as-traders-await-fed-comments\/"},"modified":"2023-07-26T10:23:43","modified_gmt":"2023-07-26T14:23:43","slug":"u-s-stocks-struggle-for-direction-as-traders-await-fed-comments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=40709","title":{"rendered":"U.S. stocks struggle for direction as traders await Fed comments"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-article__body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0002323807\" role=\"document\">\n<p>U.S. stocks opened mixed on Wednesday as investors absorb results from Microsoft and Alphabet, and the focus turns to the Federal Reserve policy decision later in the day.<\/p>\n<h2>How are stocks trading<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      The Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598065\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-0.04%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       gained 15 points, or less than 0.1% to around 35,443<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210599714\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-0.19%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       dipped 8 points, or 0.2% to about 4,559<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The Nasdaq Composite<br \/>\n        COMP,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598365\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-0.17%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       dropped 63 points, or 0.4% to about 14,081<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On Tuesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 27 points, or 0.08%, to 35438, the S&amp;P 500 increased 13 points, or 0.28%, to 4567, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 86 points, or 0.61%, to 14145.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h2>What\u2019s driving markets<\/h2>\n<p>Stocks were struggling for direction Wednesday as traders eschewed bold bets ahead of the Federal Reserve\u2019s monetary policy decision due at 2 p.m. Eastern. <\/p>\n<p>The central bank is widely expected to raise its policy interest rate by another 25 basis points to a range of 5.25% to 5.50%, but markets are unsure whether that will mark the end of this current monetary tightening cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, it is the Fed\u2019s accompanying statement and comments from Chair Jerome Powell at his press conference, starting at 2:30 p.m., that will carry the greater heft, as investors seek guidance on the future trajectory for borrowing costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA +25bp hike is largely expected but that is not what will move markets. It is the qualitative views around the Fed\u2019s sense of progress on the inflation war that matters,\u201d wrote Tom Lee, head of research at Fundstrat, in a note to clients.<\/p>\n<p>Lee added that given the Fed\u2019s likely comments and how the market is set up, he thought the probabilities favor an S&amp;P 500 index rally post-FOMC of greater than 1%.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, also contributing to the market\u2019s relative stasis on Wednesday were counteracting reactions on the earnings front. <\/p>\n<p>Shares in tech behemoths Microsoft<br \/>\n        MSFT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207732364\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-3.80%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Alphabet<br \/>\n        GOOG,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205453964\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+6.37%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       went in opposite directions following their results and guidance late on Tuesday, leaving the Nasdaq Composite in line for a somewhat soft start to the new session.<\/p>\n<p>Traders are in the middle of a week in which about 170 companies from the S&amp;P 500, representing roughly 40% of the benchmark\u2019s market capitalization, will report their earnings.<\/p>\n<p>The results of AT&amp;T<br \/>\n        T,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203165245\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.11%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Boeing<br \/>\n        BA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208579720\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+5.66%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Coca-Cola<br \/>\n        KO,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209159848\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.05%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and General class=\"positive\">+6.37%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n<p>        GOOGL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202490156\/lastsale\" class=\"positive\">+6.62%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       stock rose over 5% Wednesday after the Google parent topped Wall Street profit and sales estimates on strong advertising sales.  <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n       <strong>Microsoft Corp.<\/strong>\u2018s<br \/>\n        MSFT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" be gradual.  <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n       <strong>Snap Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        SNAP,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205087158\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-18.82%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       tanked 19% after the social-media company forecast worse-than-expected sales for its current
