The settlement was the highest for a most-active contract since June 16, according to Dow Jones Market Data.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Silver futures for September delivery<br \/>\n        SI00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210315219\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+0.55%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n<p>        SIU23,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/230611017\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+0.55%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       gained $1.03, or 4.4%, to $24.31 per ounce.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Palladium futures for September<br \/>\n        PAU23,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/236560919\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.91%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0climbed by $31.90, or 2.6%, to $1,279.80 per ounce, while platinum futures for October<br \/>\n        PLV23,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/237284959\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.25%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       gained $24.20, or 2.6%, to $956.60 per ounce.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Copper futures for September<br \/>\n        HGU23,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210058691\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+0.08%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       gained 9 cents, or 2.3%, to $3.85 per pound.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Market drivers<\/h2>\n<p>Prices of gold gained Wednesday after the U.S. June consumer-price index rose by a modest 0.2%, with the rate of inflation slowing to the lowest since 2021. The increase was smaller than the 0.3% forecast of economists polled by The Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p>The yearly rate of inflation decelerated to 3% from 4% in the prior month. The last time inflation was this low was in March 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0CPI release came in lower than expected while the core CPI release continued to disappoint, said Jeff Klearman, portfolio manager at GraniteShares, who runs the GraniteShares Gold Trust<br \/>\n        BAR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208448147\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.10%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span>\n      <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGold prices, nonetheless, reacted positively\u2026reflecting market sentiment that the Fed, though likely to maintain its plans for two more rate hikes, was nearing the end of its tightening cycle,\u201d he told MarketWatch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> This is how gold may perform under a soft or hard economic landing<\/p>\n<p>Though certain aspects of inflation remain relatively high, such as wage, rent and other services inflation, the overall trend has been lower, said Klearman. <\/p>\n<p>Concerns focusing on the lagged effects of the Fed\u2019s 10-consecutive rate increases, prior to the pause last month, especially with regards to the banking and real-estate sectors but also with respect to debt-laden companies, \u201cseems likely to push the Fed to act less aggressively going forward,\u201d he said. \u201cThis, in turn, should provide impetus for lower rates\u2026and a weaker U.S. dollar \u2014 both positive, supportive factors for the price of gold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Wednesday dealings, the ICE U.S. Dollar index<br \/>\n        DXY,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598269\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.11%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       was down 1.1% to 100.58.<\/p>\n<p>Gold prices have become bullish following the CPI data, \u201cas traders don\u2019t expect the Fed to chop more wood for now,\u201d said Naeem Aslam, chief investment officer at Zaye Capital Markets. \u201cWe think this is the best news for the markets so far this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also see:<\/strong> China restricts access to 2 metals crucial to making semiconductors.
