{"id":34716,"date":"2023-07-12T14:20:29","date_gmt":"2023-07-12T18:20:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/markets\/dow-rises-over-150-points-after-cpi-data-showed-inflation-at-lowest-in-more-than-two-years\/"},"modified":"2023-07-12T14:20:31","modified_gmt":"2023-07-12T18:20:31","slug":"dow-rises-over-150-points-after-cpi-data-showed-inflation-at-lowest-in-more-than-two-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=34716","title":{"rendered":"Dow rises over 150 points after CPI data showed inflation at lowest in more than two years"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-article__body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0002267176\" role=\"document\">\n<p>U.S. stocks traded higher Wednesday, but coming off their highest levels after data showed the rate of inflation in June slowed to the lowest level since early 2021, fueling hopes that the Fed may be close to being done with its interest-rate hikes. <\/p>\n<h2>How are stocks trading<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      The Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598065\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.44%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n        gained 153 points, or 0.5% to around 34,415.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210599714\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.91%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       added 35 points, or 0.8% to about 4,474.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The Nasdaq Composite<br \/>\n        COMP,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598365\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+1.30%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       rose 145 points, or 1.1% to roughly 13,905.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On Tuesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 317 points, or 0.93%, to 34,261; the S&amp;P 500 increased 30 points, or 0.67%, to 4,439; and the Nasdaq Composite gained 75 points, or 0.55%, to 13,761.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h2>What\u2019s driving markets<\/h2>\n<p>Stocks were rising while Treasury yields<br \/>\n        TMUBMUSD02Y,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.000%\" channel=\"\" class=\"\">4.746%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n<p>        TMUBMUSD10Y,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.000%\" channel=\"\" class=\"\">3.863%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and the U.S. dollar<br \/>\n        DXY,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598269\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-1.12%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       were drifting lower after data on Wednesday showed U.S. inflation at its lowest pace in more than two years.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. consumer prices rose a modest 0.2% in June. Economists polled by the Wall Street Journal forecasted an increase of 0.3%. The yearly rate of inflation decelerated to 3% from 4% in the prior month, marking the lowest level since March 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The so-called core rate of inflation that omits food and energy rose a mild 0.2% last month. That\u2019s the smallest increase in almost two years. Wall Street had forecast a 0.3% gain. The annual rate of core inflation decreased to 5% from 5.3% in the prior month. <\/p>\n<p><strong>See<\/strong>: U.S. inflation slows again, CPI shows, as Fed weighs another rate hike<\/p>\n<p>The markets have been receiving the CPI print \u201cpretty well,\u201d said Brian Katz, chief investment officer at the Colony Group. <\/p>\n<p>The lower-than-expected CPI data is likely to \u201cprolong the uptrend [in stocks] that we\u2019ve been experiencing this year,\u201d Katz in a call. \u201cAs long as we are in this environment where disinflation\u00a0continues and we have reasonable growth, it is a good environment for risk assets,\u201d Katz said. <\/p>\n<p>Inflation in June fell in a majority of the important categories, most notably housing prices, which had been elevated, according to George Mateyo, chief investment officer at Key Private Bank. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Fed will embrace this report as validation that their policies are having the desired effect \u2014 inflation has fallen while growth has not yet stalled. But it most likely won\u2019t change their mind to raise interest rates later this month,\u201d Mateyo wrote in emailed comment Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>See: <\/strong>See how much inflation has raised your cost of living, using MarketWatch\u2019s guide<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday is those weird days where good news was actually good news for almost everybody,\u201d said Phillip Toews, chief investment officer of Toews Asset Management. However, Toews said one thing that people aren\u2019t necessarily considering is the \u201cpotential circuitous pathway\u201d that inflation can follow. <\/p>\n<p>Good CPI readings will potentially allow interest rates to stabilize later this year, making housing and labor market stronger, but that will again have impact on inflation, said Toews. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWatch out for waves; watch out for multiple spikes,\u201d Toews told MarketWatch in a phone interview on Wednesday. \u201cThe risk may be more of a demand-pull situation, which is that you have a lot of strong labor and lot of wealth, and that could be one of the primary things that drives inflation back up again. That\u2019s a real risk here that we\u2019re now full risk-on again, and I think there\u2019s a possibility that it could change in the next three or six months \u2014 we see inflation re-emerge.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Fed-fund futures traders are pricing in an over 92% chance that the Fed will raise its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points in its meeting later this month, according to CME Fed Watch. They are pricing in a 12.9% likelihood that the U.S. central bank will raise interest rates again in September. That is down from 22.3% a day ago. <\/p>\n<p>There will also be a batch of commentary from Fed officials for the market to contend with on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>U.S. government bank regulators should run a new \u201chigh-inflation\u201d stress test to identify at-risk banks and be able to better gauge their capital shortfalls, said Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe potential losses banks face today from interest rate risk appear to be more idiosyncratic than systemwide, and this high-inflation stress test would help banks prepare for a worse-than-expected scenario,\u201d Kashkari said,\u00a0in a blog post\u00a0and a subsequent panel discussion on bank stability hosted by his regional Fed bank.<\/p>\n<p>Atlanta Fed President Bostic will make comments at 1 p.m. and the Fed Beige Book will be released at 2 p.m. All times Eastern.<\/p>\n<h2>Companies in focus <\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      <strong>Domino\u2019s Pizza Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        DPZ,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201587798\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+11.69%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares were soaring 11% Wednesday after the company announced a deal with\u00a0<strong>Uber Technologies Inc.<\/strong>\u00a0<br \/>\n        UBER,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/211348248\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.56%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       that will see Domino\u2019s menu options\u00a0included on Uber Eats and Postmates apps.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Shares of <strong>ShiftPixy Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        PIXY,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203735270\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-21.76%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       plunged 23.1% after the workforce management software company\u2019s public equity offering valued the stock at a deep discount.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Lucid Group Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        LCID,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/221104327\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-11.82%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares dropped 11.6% after the company\u00a0said Wednesday that it delivered 1,404 vehicles during the second quarter, while producing 2,173 vehicles at its Arizona facility.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>SunPower Corp.<\/strong><br \/>\n        SPWR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200243424\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+10.03%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares jumped 10.7% after Raymond James analyst Pavel Molchanov upgraded the stock to strong buy from outperform.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Shares of <strong>Draftkings, Inc. <\/strong><br \/>\n        DKNG,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/213120645\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+5.77%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       gained 5.3% after Bank of America Global Research analyst upgraded its stock to buy from neutral, writing of \u201caccelerating product and revenue momentum\u201d that are \u201care on the cusp of driving an inflection in margins and profitability.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Jamie Chisholm contributed<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/stock-futures-rise-as-traders-bet-data-to-show-cooling-inflation-98e2582f?mod=markets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. stocks traded higher Wednesday, but coming off their highest levels after data showed the rate of inflation in June slowed to the lowest level since early 2021, fueling hopes that the Fed may be close to being done with its interest-rate hikes.
