It was the biggest daily gain since  June 15, according to Dow Jones Market Data.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210599714\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.67%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       added 29.73 points, or 0.7% to about 4,439.26<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      The Nasdaq Composite<br \/>\n        COMP,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598365\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.55%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       closed up 75.22 points, or 0.6%, to 13,760.70<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598065\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.93%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       rose 210 points, or 0.62%, to 33944, the S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210599714\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.67%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       increased 11 points, or 0.24%, to 4410, and the Nasdaq Composite<br \/>\n        COMP,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598365\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.55%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       gained 25 points, or 0.18%, to 13685.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h2>What drove markets<\/h2>\n<p>Stocks rose for a second straight day on Tuesday as Treasury yields eased further, after rates pulled back on Monday from recent highs. <\/p>\n<p>The 10-year Treasury<br \/>\n        TMUBMUSD10Y,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.000%\" channel=\"\" class=\"\">3.974%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       yield fell 2.6 basis points to 3.980% on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>The recent decline in yields \u201cfollowed some dovish tones\u201d in recent cost-of-living data, including softer household inflation expectations and lower used car prices, \u201cwhich comes ahead of tomorrow\u2019s all-important U.S. CPI print,\u201d according to Henry Allen, strategist at Deutsche Bank.<\/p>\n<p>The June consumer-price index report to be released on Wednesday is expected to show headline annual inflation falling to 3.1%, having hit a multi-decade peak of 9.1% a year before. However, annual core inflation, which strips out volatile items like energy and food prices, is expected to be more elevated at 5%.<\/p>\n<p>Still, \u201cI think there\u2019s some optimism about CPI coming in lower [than expected] this week,\u201d said Phillip Colmar, managing partner and global strategist at MRB Partners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA weaker than forecast figure could signal that inflation is moving tellingly towards the Fed\u2019s [2%] target, which could result in a brief rally if the consensus then changes to one more hike this year as opposed to the two currently in place,\u201d said Richard Hunter, head of markets at Interactive Investor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read also:<\/strong> S&amp;P 500 could surge 100 points this week on inflation data, says Fundstrat\u2019s Lee<\/p>\n<p>Traders are pricing in an over 90% chance that the Fed will raise its benchmark interest rate in July, and an over 30% likelihood that the central bank will raise it by one more time by year-end. <\/p>\n<p>Investors are also waiting for second quarter corporate earnings reports. Mega banks like JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co.<br \/>\n        JPM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205971034\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.56%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Wells Fargo &amp; Co.<br \/>\n        WFC,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203790192\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.99%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Citigroup Inc.<br \/>\n        C,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207741460\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.88%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       will all announce their results on Friday. The first quarter unfolded amid bank sector failures like Silicon Valley Bank. Analysts will be curious to see how the big banks moved on from there.<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, there are unknowns ahead, Scott Sheridan, CEO of the brokerage firm tastytrade, said in a phone interview. That includes the full story on interest rates for 2023,  what the upcoming batch of earnings will show, what the inflation data will reveal \u2014 and, of course, if the economy can pull off a soft landing. <\/p>\n<p>But for now, the market is generally taking the questions in stride, Sheridan noted. It\u2019s an environment where \u201cbad news is fine, and good news is great,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See also: <\/strong>This earnings season, expect companies to keep margins high \u2018the usual way, by firing people\u2019<\/p>\n<h2>Companies in focus<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      <strong>\u00a0Activision Blizzard Inc.<\/strong>\u00a0<br \/>\n        ATVI,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200717283\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+10.02%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares finished up 10% after a federal judge denied the Federal Trade Commission\u2019s bid to block\u00a0the videogame publisher\u2019s acquisition by Microsoft Corp.<br \/>\n        MSFT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207732364\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.19%<\/bg-quote>\n      <\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Amazon <\/strong><br \/>\n        AMZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210331248\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.30%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares closed 1.3% higher, as the e-commerce giant began its Prime Day summer sale which actually lasts two days. The tech giant will be hoping for a boost as sales growth, excluding Amazon\u2019s cloud division, was a meager 8% in the most recent quarter, far below the pre-pandemic pace.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Uber Technologies Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        UBER,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/211348248\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+3.69%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares ended up 3.7%. This is after reports that its Chief Financial Officer, Nelson Chai, is planning to leave the company though the timing of the exit is undetermined. The exit would be the highest-level exit at the company since it went public in 2019.  <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      <strong>Bank of America Corp.<\/strong><br \/>\n        BAC,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200894270\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.26%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares gained 1.3%, after orders from federal regulators to pay $250 million for allegedly charging unfair junk fees, withholding credit card rewards and opening fake accounts.
