{"id":33561,"date":"2023-07-10T06:22:55","date_gmt":"2023-07-10T10:22:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/markets\/u-s-stock-futures-retreat-as-inflation-data-and-earnings-season-loom\/"},"modified":"2023-07-10T06:22:57","modified_gmt":"2023-07-10T10:22:57","slug":"u-s-stock-futures-retreat-as-inflation-data-and-earnings-season-loom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=33561","title":{"rendered":"U.S. stock futures retreat as inflation data and earnings season loom"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-article__body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0002258644\" role=\"document\">\n<p>U.S. stock futures were again under pressure Monday ahead of crucial inflation data and the start of second-quarter earnings season.<\/p>\n<h2>How are stock-index futures trading<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      S&amp;P 500 futures<br \/>\n        ES00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209948968\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.23%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       dipped 10 points, or 0.2%, to 4424<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Dow Jones Industrial Average futures<br \/>\n        YM00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210407078\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.06%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       fell 38 points, or 0.1%, to 33899<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Nasdaq 100 futures<br \/>\n        NQ00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210219788\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.41%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       eased 52 points, or 0.3%, to 15130<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598065\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-0.55%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       fell 187 points, or 0.55%, to 33735, the S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210599714\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-0.29%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       declined 13 points, or 0.29%, to 4399, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 18 points, or 0.13%, to 13661.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h2>What\u2019s driving markets<\/h2>\n<p>Stock futures were lower as the poor sentiment of recent sessions remained. <\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 shed 1.2% last week as relatively robust economic data pushed bond yields<br \/>\n        TMUBMUSD10Y,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.000%\" channel=\"\" class=\"\">4.077%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       toward cycle highs on expectations the Federal Reserve would need to keep raising borrowing costs as it continued to suppress inflation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarkets are unable to shake of the shackles of interest rate rises which apparently have further to go, with the resilience of the U.S. economy and persistent inflation currently confirming the trend,\u201d said Richard Hunter, head of markets at Interactive Investor.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, consumer price index data due on Wednesday, will be firmly in focus for traders, analysts noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue Wednesday, U.S. inflation is expected to have fallen from 4% to around 3% in June, with a possibly uptick in the monthly data. But core inflation could prove stickier at around the 5% mark,\u201d said Ipek Ozkardeskaya, senior analyst at Swissquote Bank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn all cases, softening, and ideally softer-than-expected inflation figures carry the potential of pushing the Fed hawks back. That could give quick support to the U.S. stocks which ended the first week of July, and the first week of H2, in the negative,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Not helping the mood Monday was news out of China, where data illustrating deflationary pressures cemented concerns that the world\u2019s second biggest economy is struggling for traction.<\/p>\n<p>Such a negative narrative tends to be counteracted by accompanying hopes that the authorities in Beijing will unleash more stimulus, and so the reaction is nuanced.  Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng<br \/>\n        HSI,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598030\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+0.62%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       rose 0.6% but industrial commodities that are often tightly correlated to perceptions of Chinese demand, such as oil<br \/>\n        CL00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209723049\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.43%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and copper<br \/>\n        HG00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210054311\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.75%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       are lower on the day.<\/p>\n<p>Another factor for traders to consider is the second-quarter U.S. corporate earnings season which will kick into gear on Friday, when big banks such as JPMorgan Chase<br \/>\n        JPM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205971034\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.79%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Citigroup<br \/>\n        C,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207741460\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.79%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Wells Fargo<br \/>\n        WFC,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203790192\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.28%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       present their numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Profits for the S&amp;P 500 are forecast to fall 6.4%, though strip out the energy sector and the drop is just 0.7%, according to Refinitiv.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[T]here will be an outsized focus on AI, given the moves in tech this year,\u201d said Stephen Innes, managing partner at SPI Asset Management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill, the timing and ability of S&amp;P 500 companies to generate incremental profits from AI remain uncertain. So management guidance and commentary will help investors identify AI\u2019s enablers, scalers, and long-term beneficiaries,\u201d Innes added.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. economic updates set for release on Monday include May wholesale inventories at 10 a.m. Eastern.
