{"id":32686,"date":"2023-07-07T12:12:46","date_gmt":"2023-07-07T16:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/markets\/u-s-stocks-mostly-higher-after-june-slowdown-in-jobs-growth-as-sp-500-struggles-to-avoid-3rd-straight-drop\/"},"modified":"2023-07-07T12:12:47","modified_gmt":"2023-07-07T16:12:47","slug":"u-s-stocks-mostly-higher-after-june-slowdown-in-jobs-growth-as-sp-500-struggles-to-avoid-3rd-straight-drop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=32686","title":{"rendered":"U.S. stocks mostly higher after June slowdown in jobs growth as S&#038;P 500 struggles to avoid 3rd straight drop"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-article__body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0002253614\" role=\"document\">\n<p>U.S. stocks were mostly higher on Friday as the S&amp;P 500 index struggled to avert a third straight loss following the release of the Labor Department\u2019s June nonfarm payrolls report, which showed the pace of job creation slowed last month while wage growth remained robust. <\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s happening<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598065\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-0.10%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       was off by 37 points, or 0.1%, to 33,883.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n        SPX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210599714\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.22%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       was up 3 points, or 0.1%, at 4,414. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Nasdaq Composite<br \/>\n        COMP,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598365\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.53%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       gained 37 points, or 0.3%, to 13,716. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average  fell 366 points, or 1.07%, to 33,922, the S&amp;P 500  declined 35 points, or 0.79%, to 4,412, and the Nasdaq Composite  dropped 113 points, or 0.82%, to 13,679.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<h2>What\u2019s driving markets<\/h2>\n<p>U.S. stocks were mostly higher on Friday after data showed the U.S. created 209,000 new jobs in June, the smallest increase in more than two and a half years. <\/p>\n<p>The data were taken as a sign that the Fed\u2019s interest-rate hikes were finally starting to cool the labor market, but other details of the report suggested that the Fed would still face pressure to continue raising interest rates. <\/p>\n<p><strong>See: <\/strong>Jobs report shows 209,000 gain in June. Smallest increase since end of 2020 <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe latest jobs report shows an economy transitioning to a lower cruising speed,\u201d said Bernard Baumohl, Chief Global Economist, The Economic Outlook Group. \u201cThere is still nothing to suggest a recession is near or that wage inflation is accelerating.\u00a0\u201c<\/p>\n<p>The data painted a starkly different picture of the state of the U.S. labor market than a report on private-payrolls growth from ADP released on Thursday, which suggested that the private sector had created nearly 500,000 jobs last month. <\/p>\n<p>In assessing the market\u2019s reaction, analysts noted that expectations for a Fed rate hike in July were almost unchanged, according to the CME\u2019s FedWatch tool, which assessed the chance of a hike at more than 90%. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a game changer,\u201d said Paul Nolte, senior wealth adviser and market strategist at Murphy &amp; Sylvest Wealth Management, during a phone call with MarketWatch. <\/p>\n<p>Investors may already be looking past Friday\u2019s report, Nolte said, toward the upcoming release of the June consumer-price index, which is due out Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got that inflation data point and earnings to get through before the Fed meeting later this month,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p>Analysts also focused on the pace of growth in average hourly wages, which increased by 0.4% in June, faster than economists had expected. <\/p>\n<p>This suggests wage growth, a key input for inflation, is still too hot for the Fed\u2019s liking, said Steve Wyett, chief investment strategist at BOK Financial, in emailed commentary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Fed is not further behind on policy, but they still have work to do,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>The yield on the 2-year Treasury<br \/>\n        TMUBMUSD02Y,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.000%\" channel=\"\" class=\"\">4.935%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       dropped back below 5% and was down 4 basis points at 4.969%. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note was little-changed at<br \/>\n        TMUBMUSD10Y,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.000%\" channel=\"\" class=\"\">4.036%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       4.044%. <\/p>\n<p>U.S. stocks have started the second half of 2023 with a pullback, as all three major U.S. equity indexes were headed for a weekly loss on Friday. Despite its losses in recent days, the S&amp;P 500 remains within striking distance of a 14-month closing high from Monday\u2019s session, and the index has risen nearly 15% since the start of the year, according to FactSet data. <\/p>\n<h2>Companies in focus <\/h2>\n<ul class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      <strong>Levi Strauss &amp; Co. <\/strong><br \/>\n        LEVI,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/204763189\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-7.45%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares fell after the jeans maker lowered its outlook for the year, stressing that the bulk of its inventory problems were behind it, but cited lower-than-expected revenue and margin, as well as the strength of the dollar for the cut.  <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n       <strong>Costco Wholesale Corp. <\/strong><br \/>\n        COST,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201191698\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.68%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       dropped after the retailer\u2019s June sales edged higher, but comparable-store sales fell 1.4%, including a 2.5% drop for U.S. same-store sales.  <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n       <strong>Nikola Corp.\u2019s<\/strong><br \/>\n        NKLA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208704275\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+10.98%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0\u00a0stock fell after the EV maker said its shareholder meeting was adjourned until Aug. 3 after failure to secure support for a plan to issue new stock.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Shares of <strong>Rivian Automotive Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        RIVN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/230726939\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+14.39%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       rallied Friday and were headed for an eighth straight gain after Wedbush analyst Dan Ives boosted his share-price target by 20%. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n       <strong>Alibaba Group Holdings Ltd.<\/strong><br \/>\n        BABA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201948298\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+7.81%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares rose after Reuters reported that Chinese authorities will announce a fine of at least 8 billion yuan (equivalent to $1.1 billion), possibly by Friday, on its Ant Group arm, ending a lengthy regulatory overhaul. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/u-s-stock-futures-ease-ahead-of-jobs-report-ed3b6587?mod=markets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. stocks were mostly higher on Friday as the S&amp;P 500 index struggled to avert a third straight loss following the release of the Labor Department\u2019s June nonfarm payrolls report, which showed the pace of job creation slowed last month while wage growth remained robust.
