And while these year-end or midyear performance reviews are believed to be the best time to mention salary, career coaches say that you need to lay the groundwork to ask for a raise early in the year.<\/p>\n<p>Or put another way: This is a great time to talk about your raise \u2014 for next year. And if your financial year ends in December rather than June? You\u2019re right on schedule.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cSo many budgetary decisions and compensation increases for teams and departments are often decided <em>before<\/em> the year-end conversations with employees are scheduled,\u201d Octavia Goredema, career coach and host of the Audible series \u201cHow to Change Careers,\u201d told MarketWatch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span>Don\u2019t say, \u2018I\u2019ve been here for five years, so I believe I deserve a raise.\u2019 <span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span>\n      <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Career coaches obviously advise employees to list their accomplishments to best prepare the path for a potential pay raise. But how do you actually ask for it? What should employees say, and what should they avoid saying when they are sitting in front of their boss? It\u2019s often the most stressful meeting most workers will have all year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But what should you <em>not <\/em>do? Don\u2019t come across as needy or entitled, even accidentally. It\u2019s easy to do, experts say. For instance, don\u2019t say, \u201cI\u2019ve been here for five years, so I believe I deserve a raise.\u201d Or, \u201cI show up every day on time and do my work.\u201d That is, after all, what people are paid to do.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Do say, \u201cI\u2019ve achieved 20% growth for my project and brought <em>x<\/em> and <em>y<\/em> ideas to the table.\u201d Also say, \u201cI\u2019ve contributed to the company\u2019s culture by organizing workshops on diversity and inclusion.\u201d Or say, \u201cMy work resulted in being recognized by <em>x<\/em> or <em>y<\/em> as an example of how to make our brand successful in a difficult economic environment.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong>Is this a good \u2014 or bad \u2014 time for me to ask for a raise? The job market is strong, but layoffs are on the rise<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What makes you stand out?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Prioritize your achievements, your plans and what skills you bring to the company \u2014 your bread-and-butter results \u2014 and how you help contribute to a healthy corporate culture. Focus on what you have done during the time you\u2019ve been there, and what more you intend to do.<\/p>\n<p>How are you different? What makes you stand out from other employees? \u201cAsking for a pay raise is really arguing for the unique value that you can add to the company,\u201d said Dave Wolovsky, career coach and negotiation consultant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not about <em>who<\/em> you are \u2014 it\u2019s about what you have achieved. \u201cUse language about why you deserve the raise, not why you need or want one,\u201d Andrew McCaskill, LinkedIn career expert and creator of The Black Guy in Marketing newsletter, told MarketWatch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Economic or domestic circumstances are not a reason for a raise. Increased rent or a rise in grocery prices are not the concern of your employer, Goredema added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span>\u2018It\u2019s OK to humble brag.\u2019<span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span>\n      <\/p>\n<p>        <small><br \/>\n          <span class=\"inset-author article__inset__pullquote__author\">\u2014 Andrew McCaskill, LinkedIn career expert <\/span><br \/>\n        <\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cInflation is a horrible reason to ask for a raise because they\u2019re only going to give you a few percent for that, like 3% at most for inflation,\u201d Wolovsky said. But if you prove value and get a promotion? \u201cThat\u2019s where you can get 15%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThroughout your pitch, avoid words that could undermine your position, such as: \u2018<em>believe,\u2019 \u2018feel,\u2019 \u2018think,\u2019 \u2018just,\u2019 \u2018only\u2019<\/em> and \u2018<em>might<\/em>,\u2019\u201d Jamie Birt, a career coach, wrote recently on a blog for Indeed.com.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese words can make it seem you\u2019re not feeling confident and if you convey uncertainty, your manager may become uncertain too,\u201d she added. \u201cGo into this conversation knowing that you deserve a raise and communicate your confidence with strong words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, the conversation should focus on the business case for the compensation. Don\u2019t bring other people into your conversation. Stay professional \u2014 and do not complain to your manager that your co-worker is being paid more than you.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Keep a record of your wins \u2014 and list them to your boss. Individual performance and company performance should always come before you move onto salary. It\u2019s OK to \u201chumble brag,\u201d McCaskill said.<\/p>\n<p>Keep a record of your achievements, and don\u2019t be afraid to showcase them. For the next financial year, tracking your successes starts today. \u201cReinforce how they impact your team and the overall business,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How do you prepare for the meeting?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Test the waters to see what official feedback may come up during the performance review. Keep up to speed on the company\u2019s financial position, and make sure that you are meeting your manager\u2019s goals throughout the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Schedule one-on-one meetings with your manager throughout the year, Goredema said. \u201cBefore you get to your year-end meeting, you really want insights from your supervisor on the opportunities and priorities for the team as you look ahead to the next fiscal year,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>There should be no surprises during the performance review, Wolovsky said. If the manager mentions any weakness, thank them for bringing it to your attention and ask them how you can work on it, he said. In other words, know the potential roadblocks beforehand, he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How do you negotiate your salary?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Now comes the pay-raise conversation. Talk about the ways your work has had an impact on the company\u2019s culture and performance. Outline a key responsibility or project that will continue to add value to the team, Goredema said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Share your desired salary increase \u2014 it\u2019s an opening gambit. Be open to negotiating. Experts recommend reminding your manager that this is a healthy two-way transaction: \u201cI\u2019ve invested in the company, and the company has invested in me. I\u2019m excited about building on my success, and helping the company grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span>\u2018Our strongest point is the future.\u2019<span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span>\n      <\/p>\n<p>        <small><br \/>\n          <span class=\"inset-author article__inset__pullquote__author\">\u2014 Dave Wolovsky, career coach and negotiation consultant<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Past performance can predict future performance, so if you want to instill confidence in your manager, focus on how you can build on your success, and talk about what your plans are for the year ahead.<strong> \u201c<\/strong>Our strongest point is the future,\u201d Wolovsky said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Be prepared for pushback. Career websites like Glassdoor, CareerBuilder, Indeed and LinkedIn should show a salary range for your job and\/or your company. Talk to trusted colleagues about what salary you might expect to ask for. The more transparency, the more empowered you will be.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And if the company cannot offer you a sufficient raise? Ask for an improvement to your benefits package such as paid time off, reimbursement for courses to build on your skills, or even a more flexible work schedule.
