Some are thrilled to be out of a stressful job or are just worn out while others get depressed because they don\u2019t have enough to do.<\/p>\n<p>Academic research on the subject tells two stories: Some improve their mental well being. Others don\u2019t do so well.<\/p>\n<p>Kim Blanton, writing for the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, notes the research on retirement outcomes is \u201chazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo many considerations factor into whether people retire that it\u2019s difficult to predict how it will go,\u201d Blanton notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome are uplifted by finally getting out from under a bad situation while others gets depressed because they\u2019ve lost their purpose or important social connections. Reactions to being retired depend on, among other things, the person\u2019s health, whether the job is fulfilling or physically very strenuous, and whether they\u2019ve planned for how to fill the days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blanton examined 42 studies on the subject and found \u201cretirement reduces by nearly 20 percent the risk of depression.\u201d The highest-quality studies cited in this analysis were even more positive.\u201d I would imagine the people who fared best in this research were probably living relatively healthy, active lives.<\/p>\n<p><fbs-ad position=\"inread\" progressive=\"\" ad-id=\"article-0-inread\" aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\"><\/fbs-ad><\/p>\n<p>Then again, many people who leave the work and social routine behind have a hard time adjusting to a long period with little or no routine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the other extreme,\u201d one study of Europeans ages 50-70 in 11 countries found \u201cnegative and substantial effects\u201d from retiring, including a 40 percent<em> increase <\/em>in the incidence of depression,\u201d Blanton adds. \u201cThis is problematic because, as the researcher noted, retirement ages have been trending up but are not rising fast enough to catch up with increases in longevity. The upshot: longer retirements may mean more unhappy years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How do you avoid hitting a mental trough in retirement? Here\u2019s three strategies:<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Have a Plan. <\/strong>Doing nothing is not a plan.<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Have a Schedule.<\/strong> What will your day look like? What will you be doing? Where will you be going?<\/p>\n<p>* <strong>Don\u2019t forget about exercise. <\/strong>You\u2019ll need a new regimen that\u2019s customized to your health and fitness.
