Boston\u2019s State Street \u2014 a provider of financial services to institutional investors \u2014 was founded in 1792.<\/p>\n

Not surprisingly, information technology has been essential to its ability to serve customers \u2014 including its State Street Alpha platform which helps institutional investors manage their investments.<\/p>\n

After a June 20 interview with State Street executives, I learned that generative AI could revolutionize how it operates in the years ahead. With its shares trading 34% below their January 2018 high, I wonder whether Generative AI could help propel them further upward.<\/p>\n

State Street\u2019s Business And Financial Performance<\/h2>\n

State Street provides record-keeping and administrative services to large money managers and runs its own investing arm. Services include \u201cmaintaining custody of assets, fund administration, record-keeping, securities lending, foreign-exchange trading services, and data services to institutional asset owners and asset managers,\u201d according to Morningstar

These industries were not doing well in the first quarter. As of April 17, when the firm reported first quarter results, State Street\u2019s businesses were muddling through a rocky year for markets due to rising interest rates, inflation and investor concerns with the U.S. banking system, the Wall Street Journal<\/em> <\/em>noted.<\/p>\n

State Street\u2019s quarterly profit fell short of analysts\u2019 expectations while its revenue came close to them. Its net income fell 9% to $549 million, or $1.52 a share \u2014 11 cents below the forecast of analysts polled by S&P Global Intelligence. State Street\u2019s revenue rose 1% to $3.1 billion \u2014 about $30 million short of estimates.<\/p>\n

The Journal<\/em> noted the market\u2019s selloff \u201ccut into the fees the custody bank collects on safeguarding and managing clients\u2019 assets\u201d by 9% to $2.34 billion.<\/p>\n

State Street expressed optimism. Ron O\u2019Hanley, State Street\u2019s chairman and CEO said in a statement, \u201cOur first-quarter results reflect the resiliency of our business model, notwithstanding continued interest rate increases and subsequent significant market movements, volatility and disruption within other parts of the banking industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Hanley expressed pride in the firm\u2019s revenue durability \u2014 noting that its strong net interest income growth offset \u201cfee revenue headwinds\u201d resulting from \u201csignificantly lower average market levels.\u201d<\/p>\n

Between April 17 and June 20, the price of State Street shares was roughly unchanged.<\/p>\n
