Some Wall Street banks have also joined in.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Using an expletive, Tesla<br \/>\n        TSLA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203558040\/lastsale\" class=\"positive\">+3.53%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       CEO and Twitter owner Elon Musk told CNBC in a recent interview: \u201cI\u2019m a big believer that people are more productive when they\u2019re in person. People should get off their goddamn moral high horse with their work-from-home bulls\u2014.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David Sacks, a venture capitalist and former PayPal<br \/>\n        PYPL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208054269\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.35%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       executive, agrees with Musk about the supposed perils of working from home. \u201cIt\u2019s time to admit that remote work doesn\u2019t work,\u201d he recently wrote on Twitter. \u201cWFH Friday is a 4 day work week. Full WFH is a 2 day work week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sacks went on to bemoan the lack of accidental and casual office brainstorming. \u201cEvery interaction has to be scheduled, which means a lot of information-sharing doesn\u2019t happen,\u201d he said. \u201cRemote is a great lifestyle, not a way to build a great company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New York University professor of marketing Scott Galloway recently said during a Wall Street Journal CEO Council event: \u201cYou should never be at home. That\u2019s what I tell young people. Home is for seven hours of sleep \u2014\u00a0and that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe amount of time you spend at home is inversely correlated to your success professionally and romantically. You need to be out of the house,\u201d said Galloway, who wrote the bestselling 2017 book \u201cThe Four,\u201d about Alphabet, Amazon, Apple and Facebook.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:<\/strong> As workers return to the office, companies turn to video technology<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Companies are sitting on long office leases <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>But there\u2019s a disconnect between employers and employees in terms of expectations surrounding remote and hybrid work and of how productive \u2014 or not, as Musk contends \u2014 people who work from home are.<\/p>\n<p>Office workers and ultra-wealthy people face two different realities, said Chris Herd, CEO of Firstbase, which advocates for remote work. Those in the latter group enjoy \u201cshort commutes and have people who drive them to the office, and often have no problem getting to the office,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Herd also suggested that some companies that overhired during the pandemic are using the back-to-the-office mandate as a way to get employees to volunteer to leave. \u201cHow can we continue to reduce headcount without firing people?\u201d he said. \u201cOne way is to say, \u2018You need to come back.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Companies that are sitting on long office leases don\u2019t want to incur massive losses if people stay home. Some 53% of companies expect their office portfolios to shrink over the next three years, according to a survey of more than 200 real-estate executives by CBRE, a commercial real-estate company.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span>Employers need to distinguish between two key questions: \u2018Does remote work work? And does remote work work for my portfolio?\u2019<span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span>\n      <\/p>\n<p>        <small><br \/>\n          <span class=\"inset-author article__inset__pullquote__author\">\u2014 Chris Herd, CEO of Firstbase<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Herd said this is the big factor driving the return-to-office debate, and he believes that arguments about productivity and lazy, entitled employees are something of a red herring. \u201cEmployees going back to the office is a big advantage for [companies\u2019] portfolios,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Employers need to distinguish between two key questions, he said: \u201cDoes remote work work? And does remote work work for my portfolio?\u201d Empty office space \u2014 and the declining value of commercial real estate \u2014 is likely influencing remote-work policies, Herd added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Average office occupancy in the 10 largest U.S. cities was hovering at 47.6% as of June 5, down from 49% the week before, according to Kastle, which tracks corporate ID-badge swipes in 2,600 buildings in 138 U.S. cities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAllowing an equal mix of office and remote work seems to be a strategy that is losing favor,\u201d CBRE found. Some 45% of respondents in its most recent survey supported a mostly or fully in-office culture, compared with 37% in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of 2023, 39% of global knowledge workers will have hybrid work situations, up from 37% in 2022, according to a forecast by the research firm Gartner. \u201cHybrid is no longer just an employee perk but an employee expectation,\u201d said Ranjit Atwal, a senior director analyst at Gartner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHybrid workstyle will remain prominent in 2023 and beyond,\u201d he added. \u201cTo adapt, employers have been implementing a human-centric work design \u2014 including flexibility, intentional collaboration and empathy-based management \u2014 which suits hybrid employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also read:<\/strong> \u2018Remote work doesn\u2019t work\u2019: David Sacks, ex-PayPal executive, blasts working from home as \u2018lifestyle\u2019<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Are remote workers less productive?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Are people really slacking off when they work in their pajamas? Ask the millions of people who worked from home during the pandemic, take note of the 62.5 million fewer commuting hours per workday and check out a 2013 Stanford University study involving 16,000 workers.<\/p>\n<p>In what has become something of a landmark study, Stanford researchers reported on an experiment at CTrip, a NASDAQ-listed Chinese travel agency. The study was done more than a decade ago \u2014 before pandemic-era opinions could muddy the waters.<\/p>\n<p>Employees were randomly assigned to work from home or in the office for nine months. Working from home led to a 13% increase in performance, fewer breaks and sick days and even more calls per minute, which workers chalked up to a quieter working environment.<\/p>\n<p>To be fair, a group of social scientists reported on the results of a survey about productivity in the Harvard Business Review earlier this year and concluded that managers and employees differ on their perceptions of \u201cproductivity.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Employees include commuting time in their calculation, so for them, any time not spent in transit is a boost to productivity. \u201cManagers tend to ignore commuting time \u2026 they just care about how much work is getting done each day,\u201d the authors wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Their conclusion? \u201cIt\u2019s natural that a massive shock to working conditions like working from home would cause disagreements between employees and managers. \u2026 Organized hybrid raises employee and firm productivity.
