Chinese police have warned there has been an increase in digital yuan-themed scams, as the nation\u2019s CBDC rollout gathers pace.<\/p>\n

Per the state-run news outlet CCTV (via Xinhua), officers in Shandong Province claimed they had seen a rise in digital yuan-themed \u201cfraud.\u201d<\/p>\n

They said one recent scam had ensnared \u201ctens of thousands of people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officers said that \u201csome criminal suspects\u201d have \u201cseen opportunities\u201d to strike amid e-CNY adoption drives.<\/p>\n

Police said that many fraudsters had developed authentic-looking apps that make use of digital yuan logos downloaded from official sites.<\/p>\n

They then use these to dupe citizens into thinking they can make easy \u201cinvestment\u201d money by downloading these apps and sending funds to what they think are legitimate financial firms.<\/p>\n

These firms inevitably turn out to be private accounts.<\/p>\n

Many of these accounts turn out to be overseas-based, officers warned.<\/p>\n

And that makes recovering victims\u2019 funds difficult for Chinese authorities, police added.<\/p>\n

The Shandong police explained scammers were infiltrating public group chats with offers of \u201cdigital yuan credit lines\u201d that could be used to purchase goods on e-commerce platforms such as Taobao and JD.com.

Officers warned that citizens should be wary of digital yuan-themed apps not distributed by the central People\u2019s Bank of China (PBoC) or major, state-run commercial banks.<\/p>\n

Chinese Police: Digital Yuan-themed Scams Becoming More Commonplace<\/h2>\n

The media outlet quoted a victim surnamed Zhang as explaining that scammers had persuaded him to pay an initial \u201cregistration fee\u201d of just under $40.<\/p>\n

In return, he was told that he would soon receive a credit line worth thousands of USD.<\/p>\n

And he was told that he could increase this further by \u201crecruiting new members,\u201d which he dutifully did.<\/p>\n

He said:<\/p>\n

\u201cMy credit line eventually reached [around $700,000]. But I [eventually] found that the credit line was not available. I couldn\u2019t use it to buy goods, and I couldn\u2019t withdraw any cash.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Zhang added:<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the end, I couldn\u2019t open the app at all. My friends were in the same situation as me. I felt that I\u2019d been cheated, and then I told the police about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Police said they had identified an app named Digital Credit (literal translation).<\/p>\n

They said the app was \u201ccounterfeit.\u201d<\/p>\n

And officers said it had been \u201cillegally developed by scammers overseas.\u201d<\/p>\n

The scammers, police said, used \u201cforged PBoC documents and real digital yuan logos to confuse the public.\u201d<\/p>\n
