{"id":19515,"date":"2023-06-07T14:01:22","date_gmt":"2023-06-07T18:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/markets\/crypto\/luxembourgs-antitrust-authority-initiates-probe-into-blockchain-and-web3-competition\/"},"modified":"2023-06-07T14:01:23","modified_gmt":"2023-06-07T18:01:23","slug":"luxembourgs-antitrust-authority-initiates-probe-into-blockchain-and-web3-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifintechworld.com\/?p=19515","title":{"rendered":"Luxembourg&#8217;s Antitrust Authority Initiates Probe into Blockchain and Web3 Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>A country in Western Europe, Luxemburg, is making moves amid actions by individual jurisdictions in the European Union for dedicated crypto regulations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0In the latest development, the country&#8217;s competition regulator, Autorit\u00e9 de la Concurrence, launched a market study on Web3 and Blockchain-based firms.<\/p>\n<p>The regulator seeks to understand the relationship between blockchain-based products and services and existing digital companies (Web2 firms).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This study represents the first-of-its-kind probe into the economics of Web3 and blockchain technology.<\/p>\n<h2>Ensuring Fair Competition Between Web2 and Web3\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Despite its small size, Luxermber occupies a strategic position in the EU economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the June 6 <u>press release<\/u>, the antitrust authority identified blockchain technology as a key element in the digital and sustainable economic transition.<\/p>\n<p>The agency recognized blockchain technology\u2019s potential in the future economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Given the high potential of the Web3 sector, it is important to ensure that Web3 players can evolve in a competitive and well-functioning market,&#8221; said the Autorit\u00e9 de la Concurrence.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Like every competitive market study, Autorit\u00e9 de la Concurrence\u2019s study will collect information from active companies in the blockchain and web3 sector.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This information could form the basis for future enforcement actions on companies that breach antitrust rules, such as abuse of a dominant position.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It could also provide the bases for making regulatory decisions.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Autorit\u00e9 de la Concurrence, the study will assess how blockchain-based startups and firms compete with existing Web2 companies.<\/p>\n<p>It will also record potential anti-competitive practices implemented against Web3 projects.<\/p>\n<p>The Competition Authority appointed an associate professor of law at Amsterdam University, Thibaut Schrepel, as an external expert to assist in the market study.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><u>Schrepel<\/u> is an expert in Antitrust law and innovation and has published a book titled: \u201cBlockchain + Antitrust: The Decentralized Formula.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a <u>statement<\/u> to Coindesk, Schrepel said<i>:\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cTo the best of my knowledge, it\u2019s the first market study conducted by a regulatory agency whose goal is to protect Web3, not to attack it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>The EU Ensuring a Safe Space for Blockchain Innovation<\/h2>\n<p>This development comes after the <u>approval<\/u> of the European Union&#8217;s Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA), set to take effect sometime in June 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to reports, the MiCA laws will protect investors by increasing transparency and securing a comprehensive framework for digital asset issuers and service providers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It will also enforce compliance with anti-money laundering rules while preserving financial stability and fostering innovation and attractiveness of the crypto sector.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union has been keen on fostering Web3 initiatives lately.
