Business leaders have also warned consumers of the mounting trend in\u00a0West Virginia\u00a0and Louisiana.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p>In the Georgia case, a woman sent a fake funeral-home worker $1,200 through Zelle the day before her father\u2019s funeral was scheduled to take place before realizing her mistake, according to\u00a0Fox 5 Atlanta.\u00a0Meanwhile,\u00a0CBS 8\u00a0in California reported on a different woman who was targeted in the days after her husband\u2019s death, but didn\u2019t pay the $49.90 the caller said she owed for \u201can insurance thing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>From the archives (Nov. 2022):<\/strong> Do you want your funeral to be a Porsche or a Hyundai? Funeral homes may have to post prices online for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo take advantage of a family that is grieving the death of a loved one is deplorable \u2014 the lowest of the low,\u201d Jessica Koth, a spokesperson for the National Funeral Directors Association, told MarketWatch in an email. The organization has encouraged its members to warn families they\u2019ve served about this scam and remind them of their funeral home\u2019s billing practices, Koth added.<\/p>\n<p>The NFDA\u00a0said in an alert last month\u00a0that scammers were using recently published obituaries to pose as funeral-home staff members and call families claiming they owed some amount of money for a service. In an update to that alert, the organization added that scammers were also calling families to say they owed an immediate deposit to their pre-need account \u2014 an account used as\u00a0a means of arranging a funeral ahead of one\u2019s death\u00a0\u2014 or \u201cthe funeral home cannot guarantee that the service will take place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>From the archives (Dec. 2022):<\/strong> Opinion: Funeral homes should post prices online \u2014 \u2018Just because we\u2019re bereaved doesn\u2019t make us saps\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, Forest Park Funeral Home and Cemeteries said in a Facebook post Friday that its Shreveport, La., business had heard from multiple funeral directors who\u2019d said scammers were posing as employees and calling families using cremation, funeral and cemetery services. One of its own customers had even been contacted multiple times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFortunately, they did NOT provide any information and called us immediately,\u201d the funeral home wrote in the post, advising consumers to be wary of callers claiming to be funeral-home employees who need personal or financial information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:<\/strong> \u2018A funeral isn\u2019t just a day in the life \u2014 it\u2019s a life in a day.\u2019 Women in the funeral industry are finding their calling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRefuse payment and NEVER disclose credit card numbers, banking information, social security numbers or a date of birth,\u201d the funeral home said. \u201cTell the caller you will follow-up directly with the funeral home or cemetery and end the call. Feel free to end the call without explanation if it appears suspicious or to be a scam.
