Binance has seen its market share shrink by 25% over the last three months amid increased regulatory pressure from US regulators.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange accounted for 57.5% of the average monthly volume of all crypto trades in February, but its market share has now dropped to 43%, the Financial Times\u00a0reported, citing research provider CCData.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The increased regulatory scrutiny in the US as well as the end of a zero-fee trading promotion are deemed as the main reasons behind the decline in Binance’s market share.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, New York regulators also\u00a0halted\u00a0the issuance of a Binance-branded stablecoin called BUSD that accounted for 40% of the company\u2019s monthly trading volume.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe end of BUSD issuance has had an impact on the amount of liquidity on the exchange, that compounds the pressure on Binance, knowing their branded stablecoin was in the media and they were forced to abandon it,\u201d said Ilan Solot, co-head of digital assets at London-based financial services group Marex.<\/p>\n

In March, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)\u00a0announced\u00a0that it is suing Binance and founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao on allegations that the crypto exchange knowingly offered unregistered crypto derivative products in the US in the transgression of the law.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Following the news, Binance saw a\u00a0whopping $2.2 billion\u00a0in outflows.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Market Share of Other Crypto Exchanges Increase<\/h2>\n

Meanwhile, the market share of other exchanges, including Huobi, OKX, BitMex, Bybit, and Bullish, has increased since March.<\/p>\n

According to data by Kaiko, Huobi has increased its market share by 8% while OKX has gained 4%. South Korean exchanges saw their share increase from below 8% to roughly 14%.<\/p>\n

In response to the declining market share, Binance is reportedly planning to reduce its workforce.<\/p>\n

However, the platform’s chief communications officer\u00a0denied rumors\u00a0that it is cutting 20% of its staff, and instead represented it as a re-evaluation of whether the company \u201chas the right talent and expertise in critical roles\u201d.<\/p>\n

Hillmann said since joining Binance, the company has \u201cregularly gone through a talent density audit and resource allocation exercise every six months or so. This is a cyclical process.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLike previous exercises, this will be done after several teams (including HR, Risk, and Operations) finalize that talent density audit. There is no specific number, just direction on where we need to streamline. This has frankly been part of Binance’s secret sauce.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The decline in Binance’s market share can also be attributed to current crypto market conditions, with the value of tokens such as bitcoin dropping by about 70% compared to their all-time highs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that aside from Binance, a number of major crypto companies have already made cuts to their workforces, which include\u00a0Coinbase, Crypto.com, Bybit, Kraken, Gemini, and more.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
