‘2000 Deja Vu’: Fred Hickey says AI rally is no different than Dot Com bubble<\/span>
\n<\/i>\n<\/div>\n

Fred Hickey, a prominent investor and the editor of the newsletter \u201cThe High-Tech Strategist\u201d which is published monthly for the past 34 years, argues that today\u2019s market is resembling the 1999-2000 tech bubble.<\/p>\n

He sees the \u2018Big Seven\u2019 \u2013 Apple (NASDAQ:), Microsoft (NASDAQ:), Amazon (NASDAQ:), Alphabet (NASDAQ:), Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:), Nvidia (NASDAQ:), and Tesla (NASDAQ:) \u2013 ending up as the Big Six \u2013 Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:), Intel (NASDAQ:), Dell (NYSE:), IBM <\/span><\/span> (NYSE:), Lucent, and Microsoft \u2013 did during the tech bubble.<\/p>\n

\u201cSubstitute \u201cdotcom\u201d with AI \u2013 Artificial Intelligence – and 2023 appears to be a mirror image of what occurred twenty-three years ago,\u201d Hickey said in the 425th edition of the High-Tech Strategist.<\/p>\n

\u201cInvestor psychology never changes and neither do the outcomes of Superbubbles. All the stocks in the crowded trades (NTT, Nifty-Fifty, Big Six) ended up collapsing as investors panicked during the final capitulation phases of the bear markets. It\u2019ll be no different with today\u2019s Big Seven (Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Nvidia, and Tesla).\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only question is the timing of the downfall \u2013 and I suspect it\u2019s coming soon,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The ongoing tech rally has been fueled by the success of Microsoft-based OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT. Hickey goes on to explain how IBM launched Watson AI in 2011 with the goal of revolutionizing the world.<\/p>\n

He then reminds investors that Watson has been \u201ca major failure and loss-leader for IBM for over a decade.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIronically, most tech providers will be hurt by this shift in spending towards AI. Yet, the wildlings are pouring into other so-called AI beneficiaries, when the reality is otherwise,\u201d Hickey concluded<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
