Same-store sales jumped nearly 11%, and the company said it expects to open almost 200 new stores this year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p>The report was just one reason that <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em> argued on Thursday that auto parts retailer stocks\u2014bolstered by high vehicle prices and financing costs that are forcing many Americans to repair their rides rather than buy new ones\u2014looks likely to keep cruising higher. <\/p>\n<p>That dynamic isn\u2019t new: As of Friday afternoon, O\u2019Reilly shares were trading at $914\u2014up more than 72% since <em>Barron\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0recommended the stock in spring 2021. By contrast,<br \/>\n        Apple<br \/>\n       (AAPL) gained about 25% in that time frame<strong>, <\/strong>which saw the<br \/>\n        S&amp;P 500<br \/>\n       slip nearly 1%. <\/p>\n<p>In 2021, we argued that auto supply chain snarls, combined with Americans\u2019 return to the roads for in-person events and \u201crevenge\u201d travel road trips, would encourage consumers to spend money on their current cars. Throw in an uncertain economy\u2014plus the eye-watering costs of a new car due to higher sticker prices and interest rates\u2014and it\u2019s clear why many Americans may be motivated to fix up their vehicles for the foreseeable future. Keep in mind that a S&amp;P Global report found that cars and trucks in the U.S. are on average more than a dozen years old\u2014and likely require plenty of maintenance. <\/p>\n<p>At the same time, O\u2019Reilly isn\u2019t passively benefiting from macro tailwinds. The company sports a best-in-class distribution system that can get needed parts to mechanics fast\u2014a major reason<br \/>\n        Amazon.com<br \/>\n       (AMZN) has largely failed to make big strides in the industry\u2014while it\u2019s also expanding its international footprint. As <em>Barron\u2019s<\/em> noted in 2022, that dynamic made auto parts retailers like O\u2019Reilly attractive in good and bad economic times. <\/p>\n<p>Of course, O\u2019Reilly\u2019s lead in a robust area of retail hasn\u2019t gone unnoticed, and it\u2019s no longer the bargain it was before: At 23.7 times forward earnings, the stock trades at a premium compared to its peers and its own five-year average.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, the company is doing its best to earn its premium. Analysts predict earnings will jump nearly 14% over the long term, after notching more than 11% earnings per share growth this year and in 2024. <\/p>\n<p>CFRA analyst Garrett Nelson raised his price target on O\u2019Reilly by $75 to $1,000.
